And this year isn’t any different, especially with the number of high profile players who have made the switch from program to another during the off-season. With the start of the regular season less than two weeks away along with the Cincinnati High School preview less than one week, let’s take a look at six of the top transfer moves in Southwest Ohio for the 2016-17 season:
Darius Bazley, 6-7 2018 Wing. Finneytown High School to Princeton High School.
Bazley, a top 50 ranked junior in the country and an Ohio State commit, instantly catapulted Princeton into the conversation as one of the top teams in Division I in Cincinnati. The lefty has a great feel for the game while showing very good handle and playmaking abilities for a players his size. This is the type of players that can take first year coach Leon Ellison team from good to great.
Kenny Thompson, 6-2 2017 Guard. North College Hill to Walnut Hills
Coaches in the Miami Valley Conference are breathing a sigh of relief knowing that they do not have to face this athletic guard this season. With his superb length and athleticism, Thompson is the type of player who change a game on the defensive end just as much as he can offensively. With an improving jump shot easy bounce off the floor, Thompson will make an immediate impact for the coach Ricardo Hill Eagles team.
Rob Brown, 6-7 2017 F/C. Toledo Bowsher to Walnut Hills
Here is a name you may not know about now- but you will by the end of the season. While observing a Walnut Hills practice I was highly impressed by this young man ability to finish around the rim while also showing the ability to step out to on the floor and knock down face up jumpers. Brown even showed the ability to drive to the rim under control as well, which will make him even more dangerous than he appears to be. Brown along with the before mentioned Kenny Thompson and Kameron Gibson should make Walnut Hills one of the premier teams in the city.
Jacob McElfresh, 6-2 2017 Guard. Batavia to Clark Montessori
While Jacob transferred before the 2015-16 season, he was eventually deemed ineligible by OHSAA and had to sit out the season. But McElfresh will be back on the court this season and look for him to have a huge senior season. Many will wonder how he will adapt to playing against tougher competition, but with his ability to score and tough demeanor expect McElfresh to be one of the top players in the city this year.
Lonnie Berry, 6-2 2017 Guard. Aiken to Woodward
Berry is a player that can just flat out score. Very tough kid who can score off of floaters and pull ups as well as being a very capable jump shooter. Needs to show that he can do it consistently on a nightly basis, but if he does could end up being one of the top players in the city.
Terry Durham, 6-5 2018 Forward. Winton Woods to Woodward
Durham is a grown man when he is on the court. An athletic, strong forward who never backs down from the opposing team. Durham also has the ability to face up and knock down open jumpers as well. Again like his teammate Lonnie Berry, Durham must show that he can do it night in and night out, but if he does bring it every night along with Berry and all-conference guard Will Coker, Coach McMillan at Woodward High School that could make a run in the state tournament.
