- Maple Grove’s top guards were oozing confidence (Jack Hutchinson, Tywhon Pickford) and Noah Champion had some good moments as well. All eyes will be on 6-foot-8 Max McNellis as he tries to fill the void left by Mizzou freshman Reed Nikko. If McNellis can acclimate quickly, he can play his way into college opportunities in a hurry.
- Rosemount is a dangerous team as long as they have underrated PG Myka Edmond working with long and skilled forwards Luke and Alec Loehr.
- Apple Valley showed again why they may not miss Gary Trent, Jr. all that much. Tre Jones led a group of new faces who can hit open shots against DeLaSalle. There’s a pair of junior forwards who could be especially impressive when finishing the ball, much like how Dennis Austin finished passes from Tyus Jones a few years back.
- Sophomore DeLaSalle’s Tyrell Terry looked like he has put on some bulk lately. He will be especially interesting as he continues to grow; the finesse, timing and skill are all there. He just needs to grow into his frame a bit.
- I continue to be a big Ryan Larson fan. The new Cretin-Derham Hall PG is smooth with the ball and a really impressive catch-and-shoot scorer. I also liked what Sy Chatman showed. Add in Oturu and a few others, and this could be an absolutely scary group as seniors.
- In RJ’s event preview, he wrote “Goodnews Kpegeol is on the verge of becoming a top prospect based on his potential.” I’d have to agree. Goodnews is playing everything from the 1 to the 4 for the Polars, as he works as a combo guard on offense and patrols the paint on defense. It’s truly fun to watch.
- I was also impressed by Bryce Phillips, North St. Paul’s junior PG. The kid is skilled and could be on the verge of breaking out.
- Jarvis Thomas made his Orono debut after a brief Las Vegas “vacation,” but the chemistry wasn’t quite there yet. If Orono can improve its team concept, it might emerge as a AAA contender. The talent is there.
- I LOVED the hustle from DeLaSalle senior Dominic Bledsoe when he stole the ball, made a layup, then immediately stole the next inbounds pass. Key piece and smart kid.
- Not active at the Jamboree were Minneapolis North (most of the team played in the football state title game earlier that day), Brad Davison (with family), Rocky Krueser (football soreness), Will Whitmore (football soreness), Jamison Battle (football soreness).
