Sure, each class has its own rankings, but we’re kicking it up a notch and consolidating the 2020, 2019, 2018 and 2017 classes to create an all-class look of Iowa’s finest hoopsters. Below is Part III of Iowa’s 30 best.
20-16
20. Sam Ingoli, 6’4 PG, Dowling (2018)
With one Division I offer from North Dakota already in tow, this junior Maroons point guard will be looking to add several more to that list over the next eight months. He’s got the size and build that Division I programs desire, and as his skill-set continues to evolve. We have to think the offers could come in droves during his 17U season next spring and summer. But first he has his junior season with Dowling, and it’ll be interesting how he handles his increased role with the Maroons.
19. Blake Brinkmeyer, 6’8 C, Valley (2018)
This is one of the more unique cases on this list. Brinkmeyer checks in at No. 19 despite not playing a minute of varsity basketball yet. The exposure he’s received the last couple of summers with Kingdom Hoops Elite helped him earn Division I scholarship offers, from North Dakota and Northern Iowa. A long, and extremely bouncy big-man, Brinkmeyer is still a bit raw, but could blossom in front of our eyes as a starting big for Valley this season.
18. Owen Coburn, 6’10 C, Spirit Lake (2019)
One of the best true bigs in the state, Coburn not only possesses great height, but immense length to boot. He’s also becoming increasingly skilled around the rim – it’s no wonder North Dakota and Drake decided to extend offers before his sophomore season. After a big-time freshman season with Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn — in which he averaged 11 points on 61 percent shooting, 7.0 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game — he’ll play with 3A Spirit Lake this winter.
17. Joe Smoldt, 5’10 PG, Gladbrook-Reinbeck (2017)
One of the most skilled players in Iowa, Smoldt has put on truly remarkable performances at the state tournament the past two seasons. It’s his precision shooting on his beautiful jumper that stands out most, but his sweet handle compliments the J well. He’s headed to Division II Upper Iowa next season, where he and future teammate Sam Allen (No. 24) should make a dynamic backcourt over the next several seasons.
16. Dawson Jones, 6’6 SF, Johnston (2017)
This versatile Johnston forward has been shooting up the 2017 rankings over the past year, and really started to make his name known towards the latter half of his junior season. The good-sized forward can play on the perimeter or help bang in the post, and he showcased that this past offseason while running with Martin Brothers 17U. Subsequently he picked up a Division I offer from Air Force, in addition to a few D2 offers. He recently signed with Central Missouri.
