PG Ayo Dosunmu (Morgan Park – 2018)
Dosunmu was excellent in his first game of the season. He dominated basically every possession he was in the game. Ayo excelled in transition getting to the rim with simple moves through defenders for layups everytime Morgan Park pushed the tempo. In the half court he made shots with or without defenders in his face. Ayo performance was slightly better than Mustangs Charlie Moore 50 point game, Dosunmu finished with 51 points. This is just the beginning of many high major performances from the junior guard.
SG Lamond (LJ) Johnson (Morgan Park – 2019)
LJ made his presence felt in the lopsided win over Bowen often when his teammate Ayo subbed out. Johnson was dominant on the defensive end getting steals on ball and playing the passing lanes using high level athleticism turning most steals into points. LJ has a solid handle and looked like a freight train on the loose when he attacked the rim. He showed progression in his game when the defense closed gaps and instead of forcing the shot he found his teammates for easier points. LJ finished the game with 11 points. He had a handful of rebounds along with 4 assists. Pretty good game for a sophomore.
PG Cam Irvin (Morgan Park – 2017)
Cam was another player who benefitted when Ayo went to the bench for the Mustangs. He was by far the best shooter in the gym on Sunday connecting on 6 three pointers in the contest. He made sure he got open whenever Ayo or LJ attacked the defense. Cam is a game ready shooter who to some coaches is still under the radar.
F Joshua Streator (Bowen – 2017)
Joshua made the best out of his situation in the matchup against Morgan Park. The Bowen senior played hard from start to finish. No matter how bad the game got out of hand Streator made plays for Bowen. Joshua is a tough wing who plays around the rim mostly, but has enough handles to play on the wing. He mixed it up depending on what situation he was in. If he caught a pass on the wing he made some nice moves to the rim. He also made some good 15 feet jump shots with Morgan parks wings jumping out on him. Streator is a new name that small schools should reach out too. He finished with 39 points and 9 rebounds a great performance in a lopsided game like this one.
SF Terry Smith Jr. (Curie – 2017)
The physical senior played like a man possessed Sunday in Curie’s opening state title defense. Terry bounced defenders off him when attacking the rim. Providence St. Mel couldn’t find anyone who could match his intensity and pure will attacking the backboards. Smith game wasn’t limited to all drives like the year before. He stepped out a couple of times and knocked down some tough mid-range shots. Smith Jr can be the glue to the Condors title run if he can continue to play with this type of energy. Small schools should be all over this player.
PG Allante Pickens (Curie – 2017)
Pickens did what he does best and that is shoot the ball. Allante made it look almost too easy at times especially since this would be one of the rare games that he was bigger than the opposing team guards. At 5’8 he is more of a shooting guard then a lead guard and for high school basketball it works because when he shoots. He can step a foot off the line and still make shots. He also did well defensively by disrupting St. Mel with his ball pressure, picking up several steals for easy baskets. A small school prospect Pickens finished with 21 points.
SG Elijah Joiner (Curie – 2017 – Tulsa)
The Tulsa commit started out kinda slow but picked up his performance as the game went on. Elijah was struggling to get his rhythm early on. He failed to connect on some jump shots and he even missed an easy layup. But as he shook off the rust he went bananas. He got it going making several threes from deep. He mixed it up when needed and drove to the basket often through traffic and finished tough shots on taller defenders. Joiner has taken the lead role very well for the Condors since the departure of Devin Gage (Depaul). Coach Mike Oliver has another great guard leading his team.
PG Elliot Sieger (Depaul Prep – 2020)
Sieger caught Prep Hoops eyes in their matchup against U High. The freshman guard was phenomenal in the late game Sunday afternoon. Elliot is a throwback type of guard. He beats you with straight line drives, shifty handles, and a continuous motor. His game wasn’t flashy as it’s straight and to the point. Sieger was fearless when driving to the rim against senior Jameel Alausa who is a known shot blocker. His aggressiveness would land Alausa in foul trouble. As the game stayed rather close Elliot wasn’t limited to drives he was able to show his jump shot which he made especially down the stretch when the Rams needed scoring the most. He finished with 19 points and 5 rebounds. Two of them huge off U High free throws. Definitely opened some eyes in his first showcase high school game.
SG Perry Cowan (Depaul Prep – 2019)
Cowan struggled scoring Sunday afternoon in the matchup against U High. He couldn’t get his shot to fall and wasn’t assertive at getting to the rim but he made other contributions to the win. Perry made his presence felt on the glass as he battled with U High’s bigs for most of the game. Cowan didn’t put his head down or take plays off just because he didn’t score as much. He made sure he impacted the game in other capacities which is a huge compliment for a highly touted player who’s still in the early stages of his high school career. Perry’s long length was also major down the stretch as he kept U High guards from penetrating and made it difficult for them to score in the end. Cowan finished with 8 points 9 rebounds and 2 steals.
