Rend Lake played well in the opening half only trailing by four at the half. Logan turned it up another notch on both ends of the floor in the second stanza to cruise to an 84-59 win. Take a look at our 10 Best from the game!
MVP
PG Chad Culbreath (John A Logan – Sophomore)
The Murray State transfer is a 5’10” point guard that dominated the first half with his scoring and the second half with his IQ. Love the confidence this lead guard plays with. He is tough and has a nose for the ball. Always around it on both ends making plays. In the first half he could not miss from three even banking one in from the wing. Hits them mostly off the pull up. Balanced and sound shooting stroke. Also pushes the tempo in the transition game. Gets it from the big and goes! Great speed in the open floor and always has his head up looking to make a pass. In the second half he slowed the tempo down and made sound half court decisions with the rock. Pesky on ball defender that has active hands. Culbreath had 23 points. Potential mid-major prospect.
Play of the game
C Will Presson (Rend Lake – Sophomore)
The former Belleville West post is a 6’10” presence inside. Likes to bang on the interior and play with physicality. Got a couple offensive rebound put backs and had the play of the game on one put back dunk which had the gym buzzing. Possible D2 prospect or high D3/NAIA.
Best offensive performance
Chad Culbreath (John A Logan)
Best defensive performance
Chad Culbreath (John A Logan)
Best rebounder
F Anthony Campbell (John A Logan – Sophomore)
Campbell is a 6’5” workhorse that does the dirty work for you. With two of their primary bigs out Campbell stepped up in a major way. He is an angular forward that plays bigger than his height. Not overly skilled he just mauls opponents on the glass. Gets a lot of his points on put backs and finishing dump off passes. Rebounds very well and contests shots at the rim on the other end. Campbell had 12 points and double digit boards. Would be a nice glue guy at the D2 level.
Best passer
Chad Culbreath (John A Logan)
Best catch and shoot guy
G Allen Billinger (John A Logan – Sophomore)
Billinger is a former standout at Carbondale High School. He stands at 6’0” showing the ability to play both on and off the ball, but he is most comfortable playing off it. The sophomore is at his best moving without the ball to get open and knock down catch and shoot threes. He did that at a good clip in the second half. Active on ball defender. Low-major prospect had 10 points.
Best intangibles
SG Luke Wilson (Rend Lake – Sophomore)
Wilson is a 6’5” wing that is tough. Does the dirty work and hits mid-range jump shots. Can stretch it out to three on occasion. Good glue guy at the D3/NAIA level.
Best under-the-radar performance
SG Cory Thomas (Rend Lake – Sophomore)
Thomas is a 6’1” power wing that showed in spurts he has take over ability. He is at his best putting his head down and going right through his man to score in the paint. Nice runner in the lane. Did connect on a deep three. Thomas had 13 points. Quality D2 wing prospect.
Best underclassmen
SG Will Robinson (John A Logan – Freshman)
Robinson is an athletic and rangy wing that is quick laterally staying in front of his man on the defensive end. Used that defensive tenacity on one pick and score. Solid scorer off the bounce. He had 11 points.
Other Scouting Reports:
SG Jalen Perry (John A Logan – Sophomore)
Perry is a projectable 6’3” combo guard that can play both on and off the ball. Slick ball handler that is smooth with the rock in his hands. Sound perimeter shooter that has shown he can hit both off the catch and pulling up. The rangy wing can also score off the bounce. Perry had 11 points. Low-major prospect with mid-major potential.
SG Adrian Smith (Rend Lake – Sophomore)
Smith is Rend Lake’s top player, but didn’t have his best game. The former East Aurora standout is a 6’3” two guard that has a long and angular build. Totally looks the part. Plays a bit high at times. His best move was a jab step that he finished with a pull up jumper. Overall he just couldn’t get it going. He had 7 points.
PF Chris McCraw (Rend Lake – Sophomore)
McCraw is a physical 6’7” power forward with a thick upper body. Hits the glass. Junk yard dog type. Not a skilled player at all and isn’t a good free throw shooter. Small college prospect. He had 7 points.
