Last Year. Minnesota’s version of the SEC is usually one of the top leagues and with Woodbury, Cretin-Derham Hall, and Mounds View getting in the top ten at times they were what they usually are for the regular season. That said, Woodbury and CDH failed to make the section championship winning only one playoff game. Mounds View faired much better with a playoff upset of Champlin Park before falling to Osseo in the final. Forest Lake also made the section final of 7AAAA losing to Blaine but if you ask people there they felt they should of made state.
Conference Commentary
State Contender: Cretin-Derham Hall
The Raiders are a junior dominated program that is so talented in that class that they have a shot at state this year. Daniel Oturo’s numbers as a sophomore were massive and he’s got even better. They added at least three transfers who will impact the team this year including Ryan Larson from Braham and Michael Carter of Woodbury, plus they return do everything Jacob Prince and others. The talent is there, the team is deep, and they have two years to go after gold.
Top Ten Right Now: Woodbury
The Royals played their way into the top ten last year and have three of their top four guys back led by Jake West, Jeremiah Coddon, and Michael Jones. The Royals are a definite top ten level squad and have an outside shot at a state title. They definitely could represent their section at state.
Compete with Most: Mounds View, East Ridge, Forest Lake
Forest Lake was a game away from state last year as was Mounds View. The Rangers bring more talent back than the Mustangs do although the Mustans are expected to have more coming up from the younger teams. East Ridge has an underrated talent in Nick Christensen plus a top sophomore in the state in Courtney Brown Jr.
In-Between: Park of Cottage Grove, Stillwater
Park hit ten wins last year after a long drought. They should be even better bringing back a couple double figure scorers and having some young players that have promising futures. Stillwater has a new coach and an uncertain future but Manny Jingco is a nice piece.
Rebuilding: White Bear Lake, Roseville
Roseville returns some athletes that could result in the Raiders being better than expected while White Bear Lake is recovering from a tough previous winter.
