UPenn commit Jelani Williams, their leader and top scorer from last season, returns alongside an experienced group who are poised to improve on last season’s mark. Below are some thoughts from Tuesday afternoon open gym.
One of the first things we noticed about ’18 Saddiq Bey is that he’s grown a couple of inches since we last saw him. At about 6-foot-6, Bey can see over top of defenses and deliver accurate passes to open teammates. Bey demonstrated a good motor, high basketball IQ and a smooth pull up jumper along with good range from the catch.
’17 Ross Young impressed with his relentless work rate and competitiveness on Tuesday. Young is a strong bodied forward who sets strong screens, rolls hard to the rim and can defend multiple positions on the other end. A good athlete who can produce without having a single play drawn up for him, Young is a strong double-double candidate for the Quakers this season.
If you need a sleeper at the point guard position, ’17 Abass Salah is your guy. Salah is a strong defender both on and off the ball and is a vocal presence on the floor. Owning a strong feel for the game, Salah can handle pressure, run the pick and roll and dish accurate passes from a variety of angles.
’19 Jason Gibson is so good at moving without the ball. Gibson is one of the best shooters we’ve seen from the catch in the area, and he knows how to use it to his advantage. Gibson makes good decisions with the ball and is active and alert defensively.
’17 Ace Stallings impressed in a number of areas on both ends of the court. At 6-foot-9, he moves very well laterally making him an ideal pick and roll defender. Stallings is also adept at protecting the rim and can consistently hit the 15 footer from the catch. Stallings knows how to make himself available for dump offs and has a soft touch around the basket as well.
