Continue ReadingThe coming high school season is almost upon us. With that, we are taking a look at each Sectional in the state. Starting with 64 and ending with 1. Today, we are previewing Sectional 51 at Triton.
Teams: South Central (Union Mills), Culver, Triton, Argos, Oregon-Davis, North Miami
Last Year: As far as 1A Sectionals, this was one of the more competitive ones. Four of the six teams had records over .500 and Triton won the Sectional with an 18-8 record. Triton eventually lost in the morning game of Regionals to Gary 21st Century. Overall, South Central, Culver, Triton, and Argos with the best teams but the surprise was Oregon-Davis making a run in Sectionals to get a shot at the title.
Contenders For 2016-17: It is really hard to be a team that reloads every season in 1A. They talent availability isn’t always there for a small school. Triton, South Central, and Culver all lose their top scorers and a good chunk of their depth. Argos returns quite a bit in Vinny Stone and Drew Bollenbacher but Javan Miller, their overall top scoring threat, is transferring to Barr-Reeve. Oregon-Davis might be the big winner as they return most everyone from a team that went 10-14 last year. Look for them to be one of the biggest contenders led by Aaron Parker and John Messer.
Player To Watch: I think that Oregon-Davis really could be the team to beat this season and if they are going to do it they are going to need their top returning scorer to be involved heavily. The 6’5 post player, Aaron Parker, missed some time last season but averaged 17 points in 14 games last year. This season he will be needed even more. Other guys to watch for are Grant Johnson of Triton, Nate Carnegie of Culver, and Drew Bollenbacher.
