Spectators, college coaches and scouts gathered to watch the five-game event put on by Chaos director Dave Matthews, where freshman, sophomore, junior, senior and top 20 games set a perfect stage for the state’s top prospects in the region to exhibit their skills, talents and how well they match up against other elite players in the state.
Players graduating in 2020 started the day off and tipped the first game at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Here are a few young guns who stuck out:
The black team, coached by Golden’s John Anderson, beat the white team coached by Lincoln’s Dre Calloway 88-82. The co-outstanding players were Rangeview’s Jaden Gale (black team), with 29 points and five rebounds, and Lincoln’s Ty Foster (white team) with 22 points and seven steals.
Jaden Gale, Rangeview: Gale was all over the place in the freshman exhibition game. The 6-4 point guard played a fantastic game and showcased a full arsenal of skills. He displayed speed down the court, quick footwork, tough defense and was active on the glass. His great ballhandling was one of his most impressive skills, but he also showed off his wide shooting range too.
Ty Foster, Lincoln: The 5-11 guard was noticeably one of the best on the court from very early on, and showed so much toughness and physicality driving the the basket. He has strength and athleticism, makes quick cuts and handles the ball very well. He’s fearless when it comes to contact and was drawing fouls. He knows how to share the ball and always feeds his open teammates with sharp passes.
Quinten Rock, Smoky Hill: Rock has absolutely stellar no-look passing ability, and the passing game is one of the 5-11 guard’s biggest strengths. He finds his open guys on the court, no matter how far or short of a pass it is — he’ll make it, and it will be really pretty. His ballhandling is on point and he’s also really fast to boot. He’s a smart player with great shooting range and a nice touch at the rim.
Blake Hatchell, Pine Creek: Hatchell showcased tremendous range on his sharp shooting. He will make those far shots and the 6-3 guard is lethal for defenses to leave open.
Christian Speller, Rangeview: 6-2 Speller was very quick, aggressive and physical. He was explosive driving to the bucket and also knows when to look to his teammates to pass it off if he gets into a jam. He is very skilled at shooting, like his twin brother….
Christopher Speller, Rangeview: The other 6-2 Speller had a similar explosive game to his brother. He handled the ball well and with a nice touch. Both Spellers are also great in transition and move around the court well.
Tommy Rau, Highlands Ranch: Listed as 6-8 on the roster, Rau was the biggest guy on the court for the freshman game, aside from Rock Canyon’s Jake Hassett, listed as 6-7. Rau is obviously very tall and his height is a huge advantage to him in the lane. He played great defense, stopping all drives coming through the paint, and his height also benefited him a ton when it came to grabbing rebounds – even if they just happened to fall to him because he was the biggest guy out there.
