When Prep Hoops saw Hickman this summer with OH-NOVA, he was the heart of that team. The point guard didn’t simply initiate an offense, he was a vocal leader with an outsized presence on the floor. Westerville Central is going to need that version of Hickman to succeed this season.
He seems ready for the challenge.
“I workout three times a day. Once in the morning at 6. And then I’ll lift after school. Then I’ll get another workout in at 8 o’ clock,” Hickman said.
All of this time around the game makes for an intelligent player.
“I can just tell where players need to be on the floor. I’m like a nice facilitator,” Hickman said.
“I have to take a big leadership role … I’m going to embrace it as much as I can.”
College programs are going to be interested to see if he can lead an offense. It will be only that much more impressive if he can make the players around him better, considering they’ll be going with so many inexperienced guys.
Currently, Hickman does have the attention of a pair of in-state programs.
“I’ve been getting some looks from a couple D-II schools, Ashland and [Ohio Dominican],” Hickman said.
He also mentioned that he performed well at Cleveland State’s team camp and that they are staying in touch.
Hickman is the consummate point guard, distributor type. But he’s been adding scoring elements to his arsenal.
“My three-point shot and being more aggressive. Knowing when to take the shot,” Hickman said, when asked on what he’s improving on.
Hickman does most of his scoring from the mid-range, as his pull-up and floater are consistent.
When the time comes, Hickman will be looking for an environment and coach that are going to push him to become a better player and student.
Hickman goes into his upperclassmen years carrying a 3.2 GPA.
