“I don’t have an offer yet, so I’m waiting for that first one. But the schools that have been contacting me are Wayne State, Saginaw Valley, Kalamazoo College and Albion College,” said Sutton.
“I would have to say Albion and Kalamazoo are the two after me the most. They like my game, they like the way I pass the ball and how aggressive I am on defense. I went to their camps and they really loved me.”
Though Sutton is aware that the taller guys tend to get the first looks, he’s also mindful that his recruitment is a process, and there’s still time for it to materialize.
“I’m not very tall, so you know how that goes,” he said. “I’m just being patient, and waiting for the process to develop. I’m just going to do what I need to do and stay patient.”
A pass-first point guard who is also confident in his scoring ability, Sutton says getting his teammates involved is always his top priority.
“What I really focus on is getting my teammates involved first, and I try and get as many assists as I can. And then when the team really needs me to score that’s when I’ll step up and do what I do. But I usually like to get the team going before I get going” said Sutton, who mentioned his jumper as a point of emphasis.
“What I really need to work on is my shot, that’s what really holds me back most of the time. And I really need to work on my decision-making, that can be a little shaky at times, and I’ll really need to work on that before I’m ready for the next level.”
After a very decent junior season in which he averaged 12 points, 6 assists and 4 steals, this winter — his third season as the starting point point guard — will be about becoming the best leader he can be.
“I haven’t been the leader I should be, so I need to work on that most definitely,” said Sutton.
“We lost a lot of seniors last year and we have a lot of younger guys coming up. I need to show them the ropes and do what I can to help them out.”
