Iowa’s 29th-ranked 2018, Sturtz rode the momentum of his sophomore season into the summer, where he was tremendous while playing with Iowa Intensity 16U.
Several college programs have already taken notice of the 6-foot-2 shooting guard,
“A lot of D3 schools have been interested, but I have quite a bit of D2s also. And that’s what I’m mainly looking at is D2. My Newton coach is from the West Coast (Seattle) and I have a lot of schools from their contacting me,” said Sturtz.
“I’m mainly being contacted by D2s from the West Coast and then schools from Minnesota and Wisconsin. The most recent to contact me we’re Winona State (phone call) out of Minnesota, and Point Loma (Nazarene) has talked to me through email and a little text.”
Sturtz made it very clear during our phone conversation that his goal is to receive a Division II offer
“Recruiting is a big part of my life now, and I’m open for anything. I’m going to take a lot of visits and I’m mainly hoping for some bigger D2 schools to get a hold of me,” he said.
A versatile guard, who can handle, penetrate and kick, and shoot from deep, Sturtz defined his playing style in his own words to PHIA.
“I look at myself as attacker and a driving first person. I drive and try and open up passing lanes for others, especially for guys like Connor (Gholson) on my Newton team. And that opens up opportunities for me with my long-range and pull-up game,” he said.
“I consider myself more of a shooting guard, but I can definitely play the point. I can handle and I can find the open man.”
After a 16U season where Sturtz helped torch the rest of the state while playing with a very successful Iowa Intensity squad, he can now shift his focus to a quickly-approaching junior season with the Cardinals.
“I think this offseason was a big success — getting more playing time and getting ready for the season. I really enjoyed playing with those guys, we’ve been around a long time and I think you can tell that by watching us play,” said Sturtz, who laid out his goals for this winter.
“As a sophomore I don’t think a lot of teams really knew about me. I think I’ll have a big target on my back this season. More teams will be aware of me now, and this year I think I’ll have to step into a leadership role. I’ll have to be a leader of the defensive end, and get my teammates involved on the offensive end.”
