Newbern played with his brother Melvin last year at Robbinsdale Cooper and between them they have the Hawks a combined 35 points a night (Beijan scored 14.6 a night).
The Hawks outplayed expectations last year, had a big upset of Wayzata in the section playoffs, and won 18 games total against eight losses.
Now the team returns three of their top four guys (Nathan Hill and Damien Gordon are back) plus they added some quality transfers and they have some very good young players.
“Preparing for our junior year has been tough with all the negative feedback we get with Melvin leaving but as a captain I try to get captains practice together to show the crowd that we’re who we are without him and we can win with what we got and we want to show what we are capable of,” said Beijan.
Bo Powell has done a nice job at Cooper and Beijan has followed his lead in setting high goals and holding everybody on the team to high standards.
“The coaching staff at Cooper has done a amazing job of getting us ready through multiple workouts and although I can’t hold everybody accountable I can only hold the returning players my goals for this year is the same it’s been since playing at the varsity level, getting to state,” Newbern told NHR.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that with the players we have we can beat any of the teams out there.”
What about Cooper should get them back to state?
“Definitely our chemistry and knowledge of each other and getting a key win back in our section run with a group of guys that have never played varsity before only boosts their confidence going into this upcoming season,” said Newbern.
Beijan has the slashing/scoring talent to play division one basketball as long as he continues to develop. One D1 program calls the most.
“I’m hearing from Nebraska-Omaha primarily,” said Beijan.
