Schaefer didn’t just score his dozen plus, he also led his AAU team in rebounding at 5.1 per game plus shot 46.3 percent from the field on nine shots a contest, made 40 percent of the 208 threes taken, and made 69 percent of his foul shots.
For Schaefer it was an outstanding 43 games of spring/summer hopes and now he’s focused on improving last year’s 20-9 record.
“I’ve been preparing for my junior year since the day my AAU season ended,” Michael told NHR. “I typically workout three days a week with my Power House Hoops coaches, in addition to individual workouts.
“I also lift weights and run 4-5 days a week. My goal is to build off our 20-win season last year, and win the Granite Ridge Conference. My other goal is to make a deep run in the playoffs and make the State tournament.”
The Crusaders lost three seniors from last year’s rotation but they still bring back three of their top four scorers from a year ago. Michael feels leadership is the big thing that must be replaced.
“We lost three key players to graduation last year (Brady Buckentine, Max Plombon, and Jack Schramel). This year, we have one senior (Keaton LeClaire – three point record holder for Cathedral who scored 16 a game last season) and a strong junior class including Will Kranz, Mitch Plombon, and myself.
“Our two sophomores who return to the varsity squad are Jackson Jangula and Nick Schaefer (my brother). We also have some freshmen who played for PowerHouse Hoops who could see varsity minutes. We will be young, but have a lot of basketball experience.”
Schaefer stands 6-foot-5/6-foot-6 and with his skills and production it’s not surprise that several D1 and D2 schools are keeping tabs on his progress.
“I received an offer from St. Cloud State in September,” Michael said. “(I’m hearing from) most of the NSIC schools. Also Drake, Denver, Nebraska-Omaha, Loyola Chicago, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Army are also showing interest.”
“So far I’ve visited Denver University, Drake University, and St. Cloud State University. I’m really focusing on the high school season right now, so no visits are set up yet.”
