Prospect Spotlight: Lamontay Daughtery (2020)
DuQuoin 2020 small forward Lamontay Daughtery was without question the top prospect in the gym going up against prospects three years older than him at the recent Southern Illinois Fall Open Gym. At 6’5” the highly touted incoming freshman has a long and lanky frame with a body to add strength as time goes on. Will definitely need to get in the weight room, but has the frame to do so. Early in the day he struggled a bit in the shooting drills lacking touch on his outside shot with an inconsistent release point.
Once the games started to get going he loosened up and played his game. Daughtery runs the floor great! He is at his best in transition as a finisher. When his motor is running few wings are going to be able to beat him end to end. Attacked off the dribble as he won on a fairly consistent basis in his one on one matchups with wings that quite frankly aren’t the same caliber he is as a player. He did have a great head to head battle with 2018 potential D1 prospect Kani Acree where they both took it at each other, but Daughtery more than held his own. Slick handles in traffic which have improved since we last saw him in the spring. Took over games later in the day with his raw athleticism and playmaking ability. Drilled a couple mid-range pull up jumpers off the bounce and even hit a three. Can force jump shots at times however. Defensively he blocked a couple shots and has the physical tools to transition into a quality defender.
For sure D1 prospect and one of the best 2020 prospects we have seen early in the process. The ultimate question will be how bad does this kid want to be great because he has a chance to be high major D1.
He ran with the St. Louis Eagles 14U this past summer.
“It went really well. We won some games. I saw the EYBL and see what I have to do to get there.”
Seeing the level of competition on Nike EYBL circuit made him realize the level of play nationally.
“I see intensity. Shooting it well. Passing. Being aggressive with the ball.”
He attended the CP3 Camp over the summer and made an impact there.
“It was very new. I never did anything like that before. I really had fun with it. They showed me a lot of new things with ball movement and setting screens.”
Daughtery spoke about what he feels his strengths are as a player.
“I can pick and roll. Post up very well. Score around the basket. I can rebound well. Block shots. I can play good defense.”
There are a lot of high expectations for his freshman season. What are his personal goals?
“To help my team play well and beat a lot of teams. Show people that I can do a lot of things.”
Butler is one of the first programs to show initial interest in the talented forward. Expect him to pick up a lot more high major interest as time goes on. Check out below some recent scrimmage film of Daughtery (#61) from the Southern Illinois Fall Open Gym.
