As anticipated, the contest was a nip-and-tuck affair. Potomac won the tightly contested matchup by a final score of 52-48. What did we learn?
Joe Davis taking the next step
We saw Joe Davis score a season-high 15 points vs. Osbourn last season, and despite the fact that he recorded double figure scoring numbers just twice for Bobcats Head Coach Randy Bills last year, we expect Davis’ production to significantly increase during his senior campaign. Last night vs. Potomac, Davis demonstrated his entire offensive arsenal on his way to a game-high 19 points. After opening the game with a step-back three after creating separation off the dribble, Davis continued to aggressively attack the Panthers defense off the bounce, earning several trips from the foul line.
Nana Opoku dominates
Scan the entire list of college prospects in Virginia, and you will have hard luck finding a more improved player than Nana Opoku over the last 12 months. As he continues to grow into his long-limbed, 6-foot-7 frame, Opoku is simply transforming into a dominant paint presence on both ends of the floor. Last night, he recorded 19 points, 9 rebounds and 7 blocks while altering several others as the defensive anchor for Potomac Head Coach Keith Honore. Opoku showcased a bit of everything last night, including his ability to hit the 20 footer, finish with his off hand in traffic, and defend on the perimeter with his quickness and length. Mount Saint Mary’s Head Coach Jamion Christian should have little difficulty integrating Opoku in his system next season.
Ely Camp comes up clutch, again
Elyjah Camp played an integral role in Potomac’s state title victory a year ago, and he will likely have to play an even bigger role if the Panthers hope to successfully defend their crown. Camp’s late game heroics in the state title game were clearly not a fluke, as he welcomes pressure-packed scenarios on the court. Last night was no different, as Camp hit a clutch three pointer and free throws during a late game surge which helped his team recover from a 10 point deficit to win. A pass first point guard by trade, Camp has shown that he is more than capable of putting the ball in the hole when asked.
