This year’s team features a nice blend of experience along with an infusion of young talent. Below are some takeaways from the workout we were fortunate enough to attend.
Xavier Johnson leading by example
Xavier Johnson was in the gym getting up shots before the rest of his teammates arrived, and the extra work is paying dividends. Johnson shot the ball exceptionally well from the perimeter. NC State Head Coach Mark Gottfried was flanked by three assistants to check in on Johnson, who they offered a few weeks ago. One of the most improved players we’ve seen over the past twelve months, Johnson appears set for a breakout season in the WCAC.
Nate Watson looking sharp
Providence commit Nate Watson is in excellent shape heading into his senior campaign. Watson is so good at using his frame to carve out space on the low block, where he owns a nice arsenal of moves to consistently convert in traffic. Watson is an excellent leaper as well. Watson led the WCAC in rebounds last year, and he’s a good bet to do it again.
Matt Lewis emerging
James Madison Head Coach Louis Rowe was joined by Assistant Coach Byron Taylor were in to see Matt Lewis today, and he certainly didn’t disappoint. The Dukes are targeting Lewis as a top priority in 2017. An underrated defender with good athleticism and size at 6-foot-5, Lewis is a versatile and potent offensive threat who can stretch the floor with the best of them. Expect a big campaign from the uncommitted senior swingman.
Additional Notes
Jay Heath will play an important role in the back court for Knights HC Joe Wootten this year.- You have to love the intensity and passion that Jay Heath plays with each time he hits the floor. Heath converted several tough baskets in open play both from the perimeter and through contact at the rim.
- Quentin Millora-Brown impressed today with his work ethic and basketball IQ. The 6-foot-8 junior constantly competed and kept plays alive with hustle and determination.
- 6-foot-7 freshman big man Jake Berry made one heck of a first impression. The lefty has a smooth and accurate touch from the perimeter. One thing that particularly stood out about Berry was his confidence and aggression. Expect him to have some big games this season.
- We were introduced to 6-foot-3 wing Dominguez Stephens, another freshman sharpshooter who impressed with his consistent accuracy from deep. Stephens possesses good length and moves well off the ball.
- D’Marco Baucum impressed with his ability to consistently catch and make shots from the perimeter. His size and rebounding ability at 6-foot-7 along with his improved touch and ball skills will be important as he continues his transition to the wing.
