Conference Commentary
State Contender: Minnehaha Academy
The Redhawks will be the preseason number one. They do drop a couple graduated tough role guys but there is so much talent on the roster overall. Jalen Suggs is the top freshman in the state, JaVoni Bickham is a top ten level junior, Kaden Johnson and Terry Lockett are top ten level freshmen right now, and Jose Williamson and Siegel Howard will be solid role players. They should go undefeated in the league and they are the pick to win state in Class AA although there are so many good teams in AA that it’s not a shoe-in.
On the Verge: Breck
Breck has been much improved under Coach Hill. He’s done a great job leading this program and he has a couple underclassmen in David Roddy in Kerwin Walton who are very talented so the program should have another strong 3-4 years. Despite some graduation losses they are on their way up.
In-Between: St. Paul Academy
Last year was a big disappointment at 18-10. No other way to say it. The pressure was on them but it won’t be this year. And the cupboard is not bare. Emerson Egly and Tommy Dickie are returning starters plus some reserves are back. They could surprise as nobody really expects them to do much, but they do have good players back.
Rebuilding: Blake, Providence Academy, Mounds Park Academy
Providence lost just about everyone, Blake brings back everything but they weren’t very good to begin with and now have a new coach, and Mounds Park has been struggling for so long you have to wonder how long the rebuilding project will take. Providence Academy is led by Ariel McDonald, Blake by Tyler Biwan. Both known names in Minnesota basketball.
