Deion Hammond commits to Monmouth
Riverdale Baptist School senior Deion Hammond ended his recruitment late last month with a verbal commitment to Monmouth University. The talented 6-foot-4 shooting guard made his decision shortly after taking official visits to three schools: Quinnipiac, Canisus, and Monmouth.

Hammond averaged about 13 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2 assists and, 2 made threes per game last year for RBS. A knock-down shooter from distance, Hammond was recruited primarily as a result of his athleticism along with his ability to defend and score from a variety of areas.
“They like the way I score,” Hammond said when asked what type of feedback he received from college coaches during the recruiting process. “Put the ball in the basket. That’s what they told me.”
As Hammond prepares for the transition into college, he understands that he will need to continue to work on his ball handling. When reflecting upon the recruiting process, Hammond admits that his decision was not easy and time consuming.
“It was a hard decision,” Hammond began. “The Head Coach from Monmouth called me the night before and the day of when I committed.”
Hammond became the first recruit in Head Coach King Rice’s 2017 recruiting class. What can Monmouth fans expect from Hammond to bring to the program?
“A great run,” he began. “l’m an all-around player. I can play defense. I can score outside, inside. Like a slasher. Drive to the paint.”
