Nelson averaged just under 11 points per game, two assists and two rebounds last year as the Wildcats won 22 games and earned a spot in the Class 3A state tournament.
With Carter Duncan, Ethan Hickcox and Dylan Wood all gone to graduation, Nelson will assume a much larger role in the offense and after spending the spring and summer playing grassroots in the Minnesota Select program and working on his game, he’s ready for the challenge.
“I think we’ll be pretty good still,” Nelson said of his expectations for this season. “We’ll be a lot smaller as we lost our two starting big guys but we’ll have a lot of guard play and I think we’ll play a lot more up tempo.”
The Wildcats will also have a new head coach roaming the sidelines as Todd Dufault comes over from Waseca to take over the program. Dufault is no stranger to talented guards and played a role in developing several talented guards at Waseca including his nephew Nick Dufault.
That history is something Nelson finds very enticing.
“I really like him,” Nelson said of his new coach. “I like his personality and his style. I’m excited to see how he coaches us and what we can do this year.”
Nelson is going to play college basketball next season. He’s not sure where yet but said that St. Olaf, University of Wisconsin River Falls, Bethany Lutheran and Viterbo are the four that have recruited him the hardest to this point. He’s taken visits to all four and said he’s planning on letting the season play out before making a final decision.
“I’m going to let the season play out and make my decision at the end of the season,” Nelson said.
Nelson hit 42 percent of his 3-pointers a year ago and has the ability to put points on the board in a hurry. He said he wants to showcase his playmaking skills more this season and create for his teammates more.
Chisago Lakes will be Nelson’s team next season, so he’ll have every opportunity to show what he can do.
