They also had plenty of quality talent with guys like Nate Albers, Zeke Thompson and Nick McMillan.
McMillan is back for one more year with the Mustangs and while Mounds View loses a considerable amount of talent, he has the same expectations.
“I think there’s this notion that we won’t be good because we graduate a lot of seniors every year,” said McMillan. “I’m looking for the same type of season this year. We have a lot of skilled players coming up. I think we could do some big things.”
McMillan and the Mustangs did big things last year, winning 22 games which included knocking Champlin Park out of postseason play.
McMillan averaged 10.5 points per game last year while earning all-conference honors and moves up from third to first on the food chain for shots this year. He said the experience of playing with guys like Albers and Thompson helped him prepare for a bigger role.
“I learned a lot from those guys on just being able to do different things to counter what defenses are trying to take away from you,” said McMillan. “I’ve always been known as a shooter but I have developed other aspects of my game too. Finishing at the rim, pump-faking into a pull up and getting stronger. I’ve gotten better.”
McMillan has several local schools recruiting him as Northwestern, Bethel, Hamline and Northland are the four schools he’s been in contact with the most.
With the ability to shoot the ball already on display for college coaches, McMillan will head into his senior year with the opportunity to show coaches that he’s got more to his game. He’ll take on a larger role not only looking for shots, but also looking to get his teammates going and he’ll be asked to do more on the defensive end.
There will be a lot of new faces suiting up for the Mustangs this upcoming winter. But with McMillan around, Mounds View shouldn’t have any trouble competing at a high level.
