“The ultimate goal for us this year is to come out on top and with our team this year not being as tall as most Class AA schools were going to have to work twice as hard and put in twice as much time,” said Martin.
“To me working harder should be giving us more motivation to be in the gym and get our grind on. We got to improve every day and every minute we are in the gym and by doing that we got to have our leaders on our team pushing and guiding the rest to work hard.”
Mason Archambault is one of the best players in the state of South Dakota but Mason had a lot of help from Martin last year as his team made this run. Martin spent his summer getting ready for the final run.
“My summer went great, and I was in the gym a ton this off season, I had been to a lot of open gyms at school,” said Martin. “I also put in extra hours at my local ymca for some individual workouts. Twice maybe three times a day I was in the gym all summer long.”
Jacob had a memorial junior year that he will forever carry with him. We asked Jacob about his top 2015-16 memories.
“Well, my very first game as a junior with my first minute ever played in a varsity game against Sioux Falls Washington I had 28 points, and I’m sure no one in the stands even knew who I was.
“Then the day after I had 17 points all in the second half against Sioux Falls Lincoln. I also had 22 points I believe against Sioux Falls O’Gorman as well. And I led my team last year in assists.”
Mason was second in scoring behind Archambault who was first team all state last year. There are high expectations for those two this year and the rest of the team as well.
Martin has not thought much about college yet but if he has another strong year you can expect some colleges at the NAIA level or maybe other levels to invited him to play at the next level.
“South Dakota School of Mines is really the only school who’s contacted me and asked me about what I wanted to do for college and wondered if I was ever interested in their basketball program, I haven’t had much contact with any other colleges.”
