Blessed with quickness and athleticism, the 6-foot-1, 165-pound McCaskill is a blur with the ball in his hands, able to create off the dribble and get into the lane at will. He uses his athleticism and ability to twist and contort in the lane to finish tough chances around the rim.
But what makes him an intriguing prospect is his court vision and willingness to find open players.
He spent the summer competing for Yanders Law and said being the focal point of the team helped him as he shouldered a lot of responsibility.
“We didn’t have too many people and I got a lot of playing time,” he said. “I got to play against different competition and I worked on my shot a lot.”
McCaskill is still honing his perimeter jumper and hopes to expand his game to the 3-point line.
“I can get to the hole easily and I have good athletic ability, but I am working on my outside shot,” McCaskill said.
McCaskill mostly played for the junior varsity a year ago as a freshman as the Chiefs’ varsity advanced all the way to the Missouri Class 5 state championship game. He said competing against a talented roster every day in practice helped his game grow.
“It was good competition and I got a lot of reps in varsity and got to practice with them a lot,” he said. “I got to guard a lot of good players. It helped me as far as knowing what to do and the plays.”
With a talented crew of seniors returning, including a pair of NCAA Division I commits, Jared Ridder (Xavier) and Cam Davis (Navy), McCaskill said he hopes to find a role with the team this season.
“I play defense and come off screens and (coach Dick Rippee) wants to me shoot the ball a lot more,” McCaskill said.
McCaskill said both Missouri State and Drury have expressed some interest but he does not currently hold any offers.
