As it stands now, the 6-foot-3 combo guard finds himself as the 13th-ranked player in the class, and he still has a lot of upside.
Now, as he heads into his sophomore season with one of the state’s most talented teams, Williams will finally get an opportunity to showcase himself at the varsity level.
He explained to PHIA what his style of play is, and consequently what opposing coaches in the CIML can expect to deal with over the next three years.
“Attacking the rim is mostly what I’m known for, and creating off-the-dribble. I’ve been working on my perimeter shooting, and my defense and rebounding, trying to just be more of an all-around guard,” said Williams.
“I’m more comfortable playing the off-guard position. If I need to I can get my teammates the ball, but my playing style has always been more of attack-mode, and scoring the ball.”
This past spring and summer Williams was playing with Iowa Elite 15U before switching to join Kingdom Hoops Elite in the summer.
“When I was playing with Iowa Elite during the spring I was the leader on the team, and kept the tempo on the defensive and offensive end. I scored the ball a lot, and the other guys looked up to me as a leader on the team. We only lost like two games in the spring, but sadly we split up,” said Williams.
During the summer he had a chance to play with one of the Midwest’s best young guards, Des Moines North’s Tyreke Locure. And Williams did mention he’d like to play with Kingdom Hoops in the future.
“With Kingdom, they already had their leader with Tyreke, and he could score the ball at will,” said Williams. “And I think if we continue to play together we’ll be able to share the spotlight and be one of the best guard duos in the state.”
His focus can now wholly shift to his sophomore season with the Tigers, and Williams is confident he could get some playing time with the ultra-talented group. A group that will be looking to defend a 4A state title.
“We had some guys who graduated last year and that should give me an opportunity to play. I think I’ll get some playing time. June was good at the team camps, it was all a good experience,” said Williams.
“Even though we lost some seniors, I think our team chemistry is pretty good. And I think we’ll make it back to Wells (Fargo Arena).”
