PrepHoopsIllinois Top 250 Expo Standout Performers
Saturday was the big day at the Joy of the Game for the PrepHoopsIllinois Top 250 Expo. It was a great field of prospects from the classes of 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. We will have tons of coverage and interviews from the event. First up are our top 10 performers from the camp.
SG Marvin Nesbitt (Butler Prep – 2017)
A day after his commitment to UMKC Nesbitt showed exactly why he is a D1 player at the Top 250 Expo. The freak athlete displayed why he is one of Chicago’s best kept secrets as well. Nesbitt is a bouncy wing that uses it in a variety of ways. What impressed us most was his ability to get to the offensive glass. He was constantly around the ball with his second jump getting offensive rebound put backs. Definitely knows how to play above the rim! He had back to back jams in one game including a monster highlight reel one! Handles the ball well off the bounce showing he could change directions and beat the help defense to the rim. Best in the transition game where he can let his physical gifts go to work! Like his potential on the defensive end.
SG Logan Atkins (South Elgin – 2017)
Atkins is a well-built 6’4” shooting guard that plays with a motor! He has a nose for the basketball, dives after loose balls, and cuts hard without the ball to get open. Atkins can really shoot it from the perimeter. Mixed in a variety of pull up triples as well as several off the catch. Sets up his shot by moving on the baseline running his defender around to where he can find an open space to get his shot off.
SF Seth Moeller (Prince of Peace, IA – 2017)
Moeller is just barely across the border and we are going to make sure our friends at PrepHoopsIowa are aware of this 6’3” wing. The shooting guard is a skilled wing with a good looking shot from beyond the three point arc. He let it fly quite a bit and they kept going in. Has enough handles to mix in a runner every now and then in the lane. Competes on the defensive end moving laterally staying in front of his man.
SF Ethan Schuemer (Willowbrook – 2018)
Schuemer got on our radar in July and is a name causing some buzz in recruiting circles with college coaches after open gyms. The 6’6” skilled combo forward was once again impressive and productive. He is a versatile forward that can score both on the perimeter and inside. Perimeter game continues to improve at a fast pace as he was using lots of fakes and jabs to set up his defenders to keep them off balance. Great footwork attacking the hoop making every one of his long strides matter. Can also take his man to the post and use a skilled back to the basket game to score with hooks along with up and unders. Quality area rebounder and also had a couple blocks when we saw him.
PG Branden Ellis (Warren – 2018)
Ellis is a slick handling lead guard from Warren. He was solid with Kessel Heat in July and has continued to make strides in his game. The point guard was able to get where he wanted with his handles. Nifty floor general that has a quality feel for the game and plays with a good understanding for his teammates and how to find them with his passing. Showed some burst attacking off the bounce and played with a quality motor. Defensively is pesky at the point of attack!
SG Perry Cowan (DePaul Prep – 2019)
Cowan stopped by the camp before his visit to Northwestern on Saturday. It was a productive day for the state’s #3 2019 prospect. The long and athletic wing played with a consistent motor throughout the day. We will get to Cowan’s scoring in a minute, but first let’s talk about his passing. Although he can get buckets at will Cowan used his vision to set up others with some slick dishes inside. His pull up jump shot was lethal as usual from mid-range. Stretched it out to three with some consistency. Got on the offensive glass. Also had a posterizing dunk.
SG Myles Baker (Whitney Young – 2019)
Baker is one of the premier wing prospects in the class of 2019 in Illinois. He once again proved it as he put on a show. The Whitney Young wing is a lethal scorer off the bounce. He handles the ball so well for a shooting guard at 6’2”. This allows him to get anywhere he wants on the floor to get his shot off whether it is with a slippery drive through traffic getting to the rim or setting up a jumper. Range on his shot out to three with some consistency. Flashed as a passer as well.
SG Donavan Moore (Hillsboro – 2019)
Moore was one of the most pleasant surprises of the event. The 6’3” shooting guard looks the part with a good build and athleticism to match. Super bouncy wing proved he could attack off the bounce getting to the rim with easy acceleration. Attacks his man on straight line drives. Flashed potential with a lefty jumper from mid-range. Like what he brings to the table on the defensive end with his angular frame and tenacious knack for getting in passing lanes. Solid rebounder for his position. This kid is going to blow up during the high school season!
PG Treye Tucker (Christian Life – 2019)
Tucker might only be 5’8”, but the kid has big time game. Unlimited range on his jump shot. He was a dominant scorer early in the day with his perimeter shooting. Lets it fly both off the catch and bounce. He is a major perimeter shooting threat, but there is more to his game. Excellent feel for the game at a young age. Plays with a quiet confidence about him. Flare for the dramatic and can be a bit flashy at times, but didn’t turn it over much when we saw him. Great handles getting in and out of traffic. Just a fun playmaker!
PG Adam Miller (Peoria Manual – 2020 – MVP)
Our MVP for the 2016 PrepHoopsIllinois Top 250 Expo was one of the youngest players in attendance. Peoria Manual 2020 point guard Adam Miller proved he is the next elite lead guard prospect to come out of the state of Illinois. The 6’2” lefty is smooth and explosive with the ball in his hands. Miller has an advanced feel for the game at a young age. Pushes it in transition with speed, but can also play with pace changing speeds and keeping the defense off balance. Big time passer that throws dimes with a lot of zip on them. Can score at all three levels. Miller hit multiple threes including a few sick step backs. Solid mid-range game and uses his body control around the rim to finish. Defensively has potential getting in passing lanes. No doubt high major prospect.
