Many college programs have already made plans to be in attendance for the opening weekend so we took some time to break down lists of the 2017 prospects to key in on. Here is a look at the guards to watch.
Connor Rotterman (6’1 – 2017 – Hamilton Southeastern). Rotterman is one player that needs a second viewing because he isn’t anything like what he was a year ago. Coaches can make up their minds to early and sometimes the development takes a while. Connor is a guy that is scoring the ball at a high clip with a balanced game, shooting and driving. The aggressiveness went up a tick too.
Christian Stewart (6’0 – 2017 – Indianapolis Roncalli). Stewart is your highly competitive guard prospect who is going to produce from beyond the three-point line. He has been a lights out shooter for what is a couple months now. He’s put up big numbers in both an open gym style and a true half-court game. He’s been tremendous this summer.
Zac Owens (5’11 – 2017 – Crispus Attucks). Owens has the speed and the grades that should draw a lot of attention. Quick first step that he uses quite a bit to beat guys to the rim. Has learned a lot about running the point in the last year too. Can give a team a different dynamic and already has a couple offers in hand.
Dominic Genco (6’1 – 2017 – Zionsville). Genco is the guy that surprises everyone over and over again. Looks like a toothpick but plays as tough as you need him to be. Good creative scorer especially in the mid-range. He’s the good kind of cocky that can help a team get into the right mindset.
Vincent Miranda (6’1 – 2017 – NorthWood). Miranda has quit all other sports and is solely focused on basketball. That is great because he isn’t half bad already. Like Genco, Miranda is going to give you toughness in spades but Vincent already has the body. Offense comes from attacking the rim and his overall scoring ability will need a boost but he’s the kind of worker that will get it there.
Campbell Donovan (6’1 – 2017 – Bishop Dwenger). Donovan is a little bit of an unknown to some but worth a long look in this league. Good shooter with a little size and a decent body. Offense comes pretty easy to him but probably falls into that combo guard role early in college career. Has some game to him.
Evan Lowden (6’2 – 2017 – Avon). Lowden, similar to Donovan, is an unknown but worth a look. Great size and a decent on-ball guard with handles. Can shoot it enough from distance and picks his spots pretty well in transition to get his point totals up. The body and the shot are the big plus in his column.
Jack Davidson (6’1 – 2017 – Hamilton Southeastern). While he isn’t Eric, he’s still a pretty good scoring threat and he’s way more of a point guard. Grew up a ton this summer and showed that he had the ability to take over a game. Handles pressure and length really well and can get buckets too.
Datrion Harper (5’10 – 2017 – Ben Davis). Harper is an all-out scorer. Will push the tempo and keep his team heading north and south. A decent shooter, Harper relies upon his transition scoring ability a ton. Has upside as a defender with some work at the next level.
Matt Jennings (6’0 – 2017 – Logansport). Jennings had a bad couple months but July was a spark that lit him up. Matt was hitting anything and everything he wanted and was much better, basically in every way. He finished well near the rim, handled pressure, shot better, and put up points in a hurry. If this is the new Matt Jennings, buy stock in him. He will get the chance to prove it this October.
