Many college programs have already made plans to be in attendance for the opening weekend so we took some time to break down lists of the 2017 prospects to key in on. Here is a look at the wings to watch.
Gavin Griggs (6’4 – 2017 – Shenandoah). Griggs is going to be a monster at the right level. DIII and NAIA programs should have massive interest because of his ability to play any number of position and physically overwhelm defenders. He’s going to put up a ton of points and might do it from day one on campus. He’s the guy to target if you want an offensive boost.
Hank Johnson (6’4 – 2017 – Waldron). Hank has quite a bit of upside, just may take a minute to get him there. Good size and some skill in his game but the frame is light and he needs to bulk up. Really like what he’s going to be after a year in a college program. A guy that can play the 2/3 at the next level easily.
Hunter DeHaven (6’5 – 2017 – Logansport). DeHaven has been a guy that I’ve liked for a while but not sure colleges have seen enough of him. He’s a good rebounder and a decent passer at times. Has to come out of his shell because the skill is there for him to add more offense and quickly.
Ian Kristensen (6’4 – 2017 – Westfield). Ian really stepped up in the few games I saw this summer. He’s a lot better on the ball and attacking the rim. Shot looked improved a bit and he’s a smart kid with a good background. If you need some size at the guard spots, Kristensen could be worth a look.
Jon Ross Richardson (6’7 – 2017 – Lapel). Jon Ross has a ton of value and the upside is there if he can develop his dribble-drive game more. One of the more potent shooters in the state and he has kept growing. At 6’7, you really aren’t going to find another guy that is going to be able to shoot like him. If he cleans up his handles, that would go a long way.
Ken Decker (6’4 – 2017 – Crown Point). Coaches that know Ken Decker seem to love him. Not going to show all the flash and star power but the kid plays really tough and he makes buckets. Great shooter from the perimeter and willing defender and rebounder. Had a big summer and this league could do him some favors on the recruiting trail.
Grant Smith (6’4 – 2017 – Connersville). Smith is a guy who hasn’t been recruited near enough. He’s a tall two-guard who doesn’t know when to stop attacking the rim. Not to mention, he’s an outstanding athlete. Really love his game and the offense. Should be higher on people’s lists than he is.
Alex King (6’8 – 2017 – Columbus North). King is coming off a back injury that slowed his development way down this summer but he says he is 100% and ready to prove his value. Very, very skilled and a good shooter from three. He’s going to have to be less finesse and more tough but this league will be step one on his return back to the top.
Daulton Blackwell (6’4 – 2017 – Mitchell). Blackwell has a ton of potential but direction of his game is going to go one of two ways. He’s either going to become a better ball handler and be more of an all-around scoring threat at the 2/3 or he’s going to show more consistency as a shooter and be a guy with a really high-end skill. Add either one of those with his size and you see the potential.
