Vantage Hoops was in the gym to catch the action throughout the week. Below, we run down a scouting report of a few standouts from the class of 2018.
C David McCormack | Team Loaded VA
The ‘Bull in a China shop’ mentality that David McCormack carries makes him along with his size at 6-10, 250 plus make him an imposing matchup for most post defenders. McCormack has incredible touch around the basket and is becoming a consistent ambidextrous finisher.
SG Demetrius Mims | Team Melo
Demetrius Mims has great size at 6-foot-5, and can do a bit of everything as a shooting guard. Mims can defend opposing team’s best players and won’t hesitate in returning the favor with his aggressive slashing mentality offensively.
G DJ Mitchell | DC Blue Devils
We’ve seen the big time scoring trait DJ Mitchell possesses during the BSN Summer League with Pallotti. The 6-foot-3 combo guard impressed in Vegas with his playmaking ability off the bounce. Mitchell was an effective slasher who exhibited solid vision and passing skills.
PG Jonathan Norfleet | Team Loaded VA
Jonathan Norfleet is quickly solidifying his claim among the top point guard prospects in Virginia’s rising junior class. The explosive point guard knows how to change speeds and directions quickly and is very crafty around the basket. Norfleet’s footwork is superb, and so is his mid-range game.
PF Ike Nweke | Team Melo
Rebounding was Ike Nweke’s bread and butter for Team Melo in Las Vegas. The long, athletic forward was super active on the boards and used his strong hands to tightly grip the basketball in traffic. Nweke racked up nearly double-digit rebounding figures in every contest, and it was a key factor in his team’s positive results.
SG Mezie Offurum | DC Blue Devils
One of the most improved players in the DMV area over the past 12 months, Mezie Offurm is quickly developing into one of the top long-term rising junior prospects at the shooting guard position. At 6-foot-5, Offurum has a great motor to go along with high level athleticism and a developing skillset. His defensive versatility and potential are very good given his length, rebounding ability, instincts, and quickness.
PF Zach Pfaffenberger | Team Takeover
Zach Pfaffenberger has gone through an incredible physical transformation over the past 8 months. Pfaffenberger’s improved fitness has certainly paid off, as it has resulted in more consistent production. The rising junior 6-foot-8 power forward set hard screens and did a nice job keeping plays alive with his activity on the offensive glass.
