Vantage Hoops was in the gym to catch the action throughout the week. Below, we run down a scouting report of a few standouts from the class of 2017.
SG Cedrick Alley Jr. | Houston Hoops
Cedrick Alley Jr. was a big time contributor on both ends of the floor for Houston Hoops. The athletic wing used his length and quickness to lock down opponents defensively and was explosive in the open court. Alley knocked down the three ball consistently, and was an efficient finisher in traffic.
F Kobby Ayetey | Team Melo
You have to love the energy and intensity Kobby Ayetey plays with. The lanky forward has a tireless motor and is very active on the glass. Ayetey can also face up and hit a three, which keeps defenses honest.
PG Lavar Batts Jr. | Team CP3
He sat out most of the week with an apparent ankle injury, but almost nothing could stop Lavar Batts upon his return. The dynamic guard hadn’t lost a step. Batts demonstrated big time speed in the open court, and the ability to consistently make plays for himself and others.
G Manny Camper | Team Melo
Manny Camper made his biggest impact on the boards for Team Melo. The long and active guard is a very good rebounder out of his area. Camper is crafty around the basket where he has a soft touch.
PG Donald Carey | District Basketball Club
Length. Versatility. Playmaking ability. It’s all there with 6-foot-5 guard Donald Carey. The skilled and reliable floor general is severely underrated among his peers. Carey is still just 16, and it’s quite clear that his best is yet to come.
C Wendell Carter Jr. | Team CP3
Dominant would simply be understating Wendell Carter’s brilliance for Team CP3 in Vegas. The strong, athletic, and skilled 6-foot-10, 265 pound big man commanded the paint on both ends of the floor. Carter demonstrated a very smooth offensive repertoire and the ability to consistently hit perimeter jumpers.
PF Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree | Team Final
The “Mr. Hustle” award of the week might have to go to Dhamir Cosby of Team Final. Cosby was absolutely relentless, especially on the offensive glass. The Villanova commit was very efficient around the basket, where he didn’t mind finishing in traffic.
PF Zion Cousins | District Basketball Club
Zion Cousins was an effective paint presence for District Basketball Club, who made it to the sweet 16 of the Adidas Uprising Summer Championships. The long forward actively contested shots in the painted area, and often was able to secure rebounds in traffic. Cousins also displayed a soft touch from mid-range on the offensive end.
F KJ Davis | Team Loaded VA
KJ Davis played an instrumental role for Team Loaded VA, who finished as the runner-up to D1 Minnesota at the Adidas Nations Summer Championships. Davis shrewdly used his length to aid his defensive efforts both on the perimeter and in the paint. Davis consistently knocked down perimeter jumpers, and finished with touch around the basket.
