It is refreshing for a head coach of a high school basketball program to know that all of his players from the previous season will be returning. That is the exact feeling that Trotwood Madison coach Rocky Rockhold must have had this entire off season despite falling to Taft in their district final game last season, 77-67.
This youthful group, that is still quite young, are led by Torrey Patton (2017). Patton, a 6-foot-4 guard that has proved to be one of the premier talents out of the western region of Ohio.
A couple other names that were big contributors last year, and will continue to be important factors, for the rams this year include junior Myles Belyu (9.1 rebounds per game), sophomore Justin Stephens (2.2 blocks per game) and sophomore Amari Davis (2.7 steals per game).
Now back to Patton.
Patton’s strengths begin on the defensive end, having the ability to disrupt the passing lanes at any time. I mean, the rising senior finished the 2015-2016 season averaging an impressive 3.9 steals per game.
Although his defense is something to talk about, scouts and analysts can’t overlook the fact that Patton can flat out score the rock. As a junior he averaged 21.1 points per contest by knocking down deep balls, finishing strong at the rim and losing the opposing teams on the fast break with his quickness. Patton knows how to keep the game moving at a fast pace, and he uses that skill to his advantage.

Running with All-Ohio basketball throughout the AAU circuit, Patton was able to receive a ton of interest from notable collegiate programs. Wright State, Bowling Green, Ashland (DII), Cedarville (DII) and Findlay (DII) are the schools that stand out in his list.
“I am looking for a school with strong academics,” Patton said when asked about what kind of school he was looking for. “And I would like to find a place where I can play right away.”
With his long frame, Patton has the opportunity to play both the point guard and shooting guard positions in college. For Trotwood-Madison he takes care of the ball handling responsibilities, but with his ability to score, he could be a player that an offense can be ran through.
Look out for Patton and Trotwood-Madison to make some noise in the 2016-2017 season.
