Update from 4/29/16
Rochester JM/D1 MN Prospects forward Dedoch Chan went through quite a bit of drama in the last 12 months. Here’s a news article from August, announcing Chan’s intentions to move to Rochester and attend John Marshall. He was coming from Albert Lea, a program that went 0-27 in Chan’s sophomore year. Here’s another article from November, the beginning of the basketball season, about “questions lingering about Chan’s eligibility.”
The questions were surrounding the transfer rule that has been the center of some controversy in Minnesota, designed to prevent kids from hopping school-to-school in search of playing time. This is usually an issue in the suburbs when metro kids hop one district over and register at a neighboring school; but the Chan family actually moved from one city to another, an hour apart.
Finally, here’s the article from mid-January stating that Chan was finally eligible and ready to play for the Rockets. That must have been an extremely relieving day for the Chan family.
“It was (stressful),” Chan told NHR. “I feel like I missed out on opportunities to get more exposure. And it didn’t really help my individual development playing JV. It’s going to be much easier to get accustomed to playing with my teammates next year.”Chan joined D1 MN Prospects this spring and has managed to keep the ball rolling with his recruitment. He’s got the great fortune of being an athletic, skilled 6-foot-7 forward with a 3.71 GPA.”Spring is going pretty well,” he said. “I’ve been making a lot of improvement, and I have been focusing a lot on improving my strength. I have gotten some calls from Columbia, Princeton, SDSU, UND, and a few D2 schools. I’m aiming for D1, but I am also open to D2 or juco levels.”
NHR is happy that Chan is finally back in a basketball rhythm, eligible for his school team and doing well on the grassroots circuit. All of our conversations with him have been excellent, as he carries himself well and is a smart kid.
