In the forgotten area of basketball in the state, when there’s a young player that’s a pure shooter, it doesn’t take long for it to get out.
In the case of William Byrd rising sophomore Alex Fitch, it took about three minutes on a cold December night last season for him to catch our attention by hitting three deep balls, and when we asked around all we kept hearing is “That’s the best shooter in Roanoke, and he’s only a freshman.”
It’s not just the fact that he made the shots, but that he did so with such confidence. At 6’3”, Fitch has a good frame already, and one that looks like he’ll fill out well. He has deep range, a quick release and good form, and proved that he was one of the best young shooters in the state when he led the Under Armour Circuit in three-point makes for the 15U division, and was second among all age groups with a 48% mark from deep with the DC Blue Devils.
Alex Fitch has established himself as one of the best shooters in VA.While his pure stroke is what caught the eyes of local scouts and coaches, Fitch is determined to show that he’s an all-around weapon on the offensive end and not just a spot up shooter.
“My mentality going into next season is that I will need to step into more of a leadership position and do more of everything instead of just shooting,” Fitch said.
As a freshman, Fitch came off of the bench in a sixth man role for Byrd and brought instant offense with his ability to catch fire quickly from deep. On a team that was one close loss away from making the state semifinals, he showed poise in big situations, including hitting four three-pointers against John Champe in the state quarterfinals.
This summer, he split time with Spectrum and DC Blue Devils, and when he wasn’t on the road with them he was in the gym working on his game so he’ll be ready to be the go-to guy this season.
“I’m a lot stronger, quicker faster and a much better defender after this summer,” Fitch said. “I’m ready to lead my team to states.”
With his quiet but confident demeanor, don’t be surprised if Fitch and his Byrd team surprise some people in the Roanoke area with another big year. It won’t be long before division one schools start inquiring about him if he can establish himself as an elite scorer in the Roanoke area.
