Smith attends Word of God Christian in Raleigh and is poised for a breakout season after injury to his ankle. He is a mid-major prospect, with offers from Jacksonville State and Alcorn State. Smith said that recently, ” Baylor University and Georgia Tech have reached out.”
He is great in the full-court or setting up the ball in the half-court offense, a very good ball-handler and can score ff the dribble. He is an elite level athlete with a vertical in the 40-41 inch range. PrepHoopsNC had the chance to speak with Todd about this upcoming season, his recruitment and how he is progressing with his injured ankle.
PrepHoopsNC: What are your goals for the upcoming season at Word of God?
Todd Smith: My goals for this season at Word Of God is to just get better. And become as college ready as I possibly can from a physical and IQ standpoint.
PrepHoopsNC: When the time comes to make a college decision, what are you looking at the most about a program?
Todd Smith: When it’s time to make my decision I want to go to a program who can develop me. My ultimate goal is to play in the NBA. So I want a college who has a history of putting guys in the pros. I want to ultimately have shot at winning a national championship.
PrepHoopsNC: What do you consider the best parts of your game?
Todd Smith: The most important part of my game is being a bigger point guard. I’m quicker than most point guards see the floor and more athletic.
PrepHoopsNC: What are some things that you need to work on to get to the next level?
Todd Smith: Somethings I need to work is my vocal leadership. Being able to lead my teammates and put everyone in the right spots throughout a whole game would probably biggest thing I need to fix.
PrepHoopsNC: Can you fill me in on your injury and how your rehabilitation is going?
Todd Smith: “As a freshman I went to Flora MacDonald Academy where I played with guys like Shawn Kirk, a NC State commit at the time. Already being weaker and young I had a little injury to my ankle that I kept under wraps. My sophomore year The week after I played Dennis Smith and won lol( I had 17 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. We were playing Greenfield School with UNC commit Coby White, when I went up to block a shot and came down. I tore every ligament in my ankle. My rehab was 9 months it took me nearly 18 months to get full strength so things that were natural like jumping high and running fast I just got back to doing. 3 months after I got cleared to play I went to ECU elite camp and my vertical only measured at 36 I knew I still had a ways to go to get back to where I was. I am at 85-90% now.”
PrepHoopsNC: Who do you see starting at Word of God along with you this season?
Todd Smith: Blake and Brandon of course and then probably Aaron Simmons and Evan Johnson that’s how it was at team camp atleast
