As the season winds down and many players return from AAU back to their high school squads, we’ll be taking a look back at some of the players who have raised their stock the most since last high school season. Below, we take a look at five wings and big men in the 2019 class who’ve been performing well and are set to break out.
RJ Blakney | St. Maria Goretti
There’s no question that RJ Blakney has the athleticism, size, and explosiveness to play at the highest level. The lanky rising sophomore wing blends outstanding physical attributes with an improving skill set and a commendable work ethic. While he’s yet to yield his first scholarship offer to this point, it won’t be long before division one programs begin actively recruiting Blakney.
Dejean Desire | Georgetown Prep
He’s still just scratching the surface of where he can be in three years, but the signs surrounding the development of Dejean Desire have been all positive thus far. A gifted athlete with impressive length and leaping ability, Desire is relentless defensively and rebounds well out of his position. Look for Desire to continue his development and evolve from an intriguing young prospect into a sure fire division one player.
EJ Jarvis | Maret
Still a relatively unknown player among most recruiting circles to this point, EJ Jarvis isn’t far from becoming a household name. A super active 6-foot-9 power forward with awesome athleticism and impeccable touch, Jarvis has high major written all over him. Jarvis carries a strong GPA at one of the most rigorous academic schools in the nation, and has the potential to be recruited by virtually any high academic program. Jarvis will pair in the Frogs’ front court alongside nationally touted 6-foot-11 rising senior Luka Garza to form what should be one the most feared and productive partnerships in the Mid-Atlantic.
Mekhi Long | St. Mary’s Ryken
Versatility is the name of the game when it comes to Mekhi Long. The 6-foot-6 wing can do virtually everything on the basketball court. Whether it’s locking down a productive perimeter player or hitting the defensive boards, Long has the potential and talent to get the job done. Long is the type of player who will work very hard and won’t take plays off. With an offer from Hampton already under his belt, it’s just a matter of time before Long’s recruitment begins to expand.
Makhel Mitchell | Bishop McNamara
As Makhel Mitchell continues to focus on improving his fitness and conditioning, he’s beginning to make a bigger and bigger impact on the game. While his twin brother Makhi is a bit further along with his development at this point, Makhel has made considerable strides towards catching up to his brother this summer. Makhel is projected to earn more playing time this year, and given his results this summer, we expect him to consistently produce for the Mustangs.
