Over the next week or two, we’ll break down the players that are available in the class of 2017 still in these four categories: Guards, Wings, Forwards, Posts.
First, we will take a look at players in the Top 10 who have not committed then get into players based on the categories listed above. With the recent commitment of Davontavean Martin (6’4 G, Ellender) to Tulane for both basketball and football, it leaves just 6 of the top 10 uncommitted.
One player who continues to rise nationally is Josh Anderson (6’5 G, Madison Prep) and his ability to play on and off the ball is a major factor. He drew some rave reviews at the Elite 24 where he showed off his ability to get to the rim 1 on 1 or off a ball screen while defending extremely well. The other high level player available is Brandon Rachal (6’6 G/F, Natchitoches Central) and he’s known for his defense as well. Multiple coaches talked about their desire to see him at the point guard position at times in college.
Cedric Russell (6’3 G, Peabody) is one of the best shooters in the class and was once an LSU commit. He’s taking an interesting path recruiting wise by having in home visits first. Multiple visits are set up currently and his recruitment will likely heat up soon. The best big man available is quiet in his recruitment and that’s Larry Owens (6’8 PF/C, Carroll). He’s skilled offensively around the basket and can step out to the free throw line to knock down shots. Wide body defender that moves his feet better than expected.
Possibly the biggest sleeper in the class is Caleb Daniels (6’3 G, St. Augustine) who was injured in July and not able to showcase his talent. There is very little he can’t do on a basketball court and has the athleticism to back it up. Once it all comes together, he could be mentioned with anyone in this class. Romin Williams (5’10 PG, Country Day) is the top true point guard and number 10 overall in our rankings. He can score when needed but excels in running a team and defending. His recruitment is still open but certainly one to watch with what we’re hearing.
The current committed players in the Top 10 are: Mitchell Robinson (6’11 PF/C, Chalmette) to Western Kentucky, Galen Alexander (6’6 F, Lafayette Christian) to LSU, Joseph Thompson (6’9 F, Bonnabel) to South Alabama, and most recently Davontavean Martin to Tulane as we mentioned above (see tweet below).
