For Payton junior year will be big, both academically and athletically. He has the brains and brawn to excel beyond high school in two capacities. Junior year means standardized tests, tougher classes, and of course a larger role on the legendary Moeller basketball team.
The Queen City point guard helped his All-Ohio Red 16u squad win AAU Super Showcase in Orlando.
“Great opportunity to play against great kids,” said Isaiah Payton.
They were exceptional in South Carolina.
“I backed up the point guard and played at the off guard,” said Payton. “I was more of a role player. I got an opportunity to score a little bit. I got some assists. (My role was) just got to bring a lot of energy off the bench.”
All-Ohio Red was just recognized by PrepHoopsOhio as this year’s top AAU team in the state. Payton was a key cog in the machine.
Payton didn’t camp this summer.
“I actually haven’t camped,” said Payton. “I did not go to any elite camps. I played in some local stuff in Cincinnati. The TripleDouble event.”
Recruiting
PrepHoops caught up with “Sleepy” Payton back in February, and his schools of interest have increased modestly since then. Payton does have college interest and was invited to see a few schools.
“Kent State, Wofford,” began Payton. “Air Force. Radford, also. And Ashland. About 4-5 schools contacted us and showed some interest. They want us to come look at their campus.”
In addition to the likely campus visits this fall, Payton needs to get a few coaches down in September for workouts. He will start attracting low major D1 offers by next AAU season, the sooner the better.
And, oh that monster of a test…the ACT.
“I will probably do it in the fall,” said Payton.
He is prepared, as well as anybody in Ohio. Moeller is exceptional. This season he takes on more life and hoop responsibilities.
