Current Ranking: 8
Basala is the Ryan Kriener of the 2017 class. Late last summer Kriener picked up several Division I offers, and had by far the most of anyone else in the 2016 class. Basala has been on a tear with the Barnstormers this summer, and is now up to eight D1 offers (more than anyone in his class), those are; North Dakota, Air Force, Holy Cross, Duquesne, UC Davis, Albany, American, and Central Michigan.
2018 Blake Brinkmeyer, 6’8 C (Valley)
Current Ranking: 49
The kid has not played a lick of varsity basketball yet, but he has two Division I offers. He picked up North Dakota early in July, and just yesterday was offered by mid-major power Northern Iowa. The sky is the limit for this extremely lengthy and very bouncy junior-to-be.
2017 Dawson Jones, 6’6 SF (Johnston)
Current Ranking: 38
Jones, like Basala, was on the June stock-risers list, and we had to put him on this one too. Martin Brothers program director Hank Huddlesson says Jones was one of the two best players on the 17U team this summer, and he picked up a Division I offer from Air Force to back that up.
2019 James Betz, 6’6 F (G-H-V)
Current Ranking: 5
It’s hard to move up from No. 5, but Betz likely will after his absolutely dominating performance at the Hardwood Classic — against top competition — in Lawrence during the last live period. If I was a D1 program I’d be sniffing this kid out now.
2018 Camden Vander Zwaag, 6’3 SG (Johnston)
Current Ranking: 37
Another Johnston Dragon makes the list, that could spell trouble for CIML foes next season. Vander Zwaag has grown a bit, and can now get his precise shot off more easily. He’s established himself as one of the state’s eilte shooters. And could average close to 20 points per game as a junior with the Dragons. He’s one of those guys that when he misses, you’re surprised.
2018 John Herrick, 6’7 SF (Boone)
Current Ranking: 13
The Boone product has a lot of people are talking about him. He definitely looks the part of a Division I prospect — 6-foot-7 with a decent build — and Drake has taken notice. The Bulldogs called the junior-to-be last week.
2017 Tajen Ross, 6’2 G (ADM)
Current Rank: 30
Ross has made many substantial leaps in the rankings over the last year-and-a-half, and will make another one in the new 2017 rankings that will be unveiled later this week. He make his case while playing up with Kingdom Hoops Elite at the Hardwood Classic — Ross was instrumental to their title run.
2017 Landon Torneton, 6’5 G/F (Council Bluffs Lincoln)
Current Rank: 57
This kid went from completely unknown to the top-60 2107 after we saw him playing with SW Iowa Select this spring at a tournament in Des Moines. And now he’s got some NAIA offers to boast (Briar Cliff, Doane), and some heavy Division II interest.
