In this edition we highlight five emerging players who could emerge among the top scorers in the area this season.
Dontae Johnson | Annandale ’17
With an average of over 17 points per game last season, Dontae Johnson showed that he can be aggressive and consistently put the ball in the basket each time he hits the floor. With another full year of varsity experience of his belt, look for Johnson to put up even more productive numbers for the Atoms as a senior.
Denmark Slay | St. Stephen’s St. Agnes ’17
Once part of one of the most dynamic guard duos in the DMV, Denmark Slay will play his senior year without Donovann Toatley who’s transferred to Riverdale Baptist. Slay, who was a standout with District Basketball Club this summer on the grassroots circuit, is heading into his final high school campaign with a ton of positive momentum. Look for Slay, who’ll be regarded as a leader on a relatively young team, to be among the top scorers in the IAC.
Anthony Harris | Paul VI ’19
We seen flashes of what Anthony Harris can do during his exciting freshman campaign. After a full season in the WCAC, followed by a summer filled rigorous competition on the EYBL with 16U Team Takeover, Harris is poised to step into a more consistent role for Panthers Head Coach Glenn Farello. Given the departures of McDonalds All-American VJ King, along with Corey Manigault, and Myles Douglas, we expect Harris to be more aggressive offensively and average healthy scoring numbers as a sophomore.
Markos Eyob | Robinson ’17
One of the most under-the-radar players in the entire DMV, we saw what Markos Eyob was capable of throughout his junior year with Robinson. A skilled lead guard who can shoot the lights out from the perimeter, Eyob should lead the Rams in scoring this year with the graduation of Avi Silberman and Chi Zama. Eyob didn’t play AAU this summer in an effort to focus more on improving his strength and skills. Look for the Rams’ success to hinge on the level of consistency with which Eyob can produce.
Everette Hammond | St. Vincent Pallotti ’17
Alongside DJ Mitchell, Everette Hammond was a part of one of the most talented wing duos in the state of Maryland. With the departure of Mitchell to Florida, Hammond figures to assume more of a primary scoring role for Pallotti. Look for his scoring numbers to inflate, reflecting an increased role in his final campaign.
