In this edition we highlight five dark horses who could find themselves among the top scorers in the area this season.
Michael Griffin | Herndon ’17
Herndon’s leading scorer a season ago, Michael Griffin averaged nearly 17 points per contest. Griffin, who’s worked very hard to improve his jumper over the past twelve month’s should see an increased scoring load this season due to the departure of exciting young sophomore James Lee, who plans to attend school in Florida.
Halil Parks | Wakefield ’17
Perhaps the most consistent three point threat for Head Coach Tony Bentley a season ago, Halil Parks thrived in his first year with the Warriors as he was tied for the team lead in scoring. The former Yorktown transfer will likely lead the team in scoring this season as he will pair with fellow senior Alan Treakle in what should be one of the most talented back court pairings in the DMV.
Corey Pelham | Lake Braddock ’17
One of the most deadly shooters in the Northern Region, Corey Pelham showed signs of his explosive scoring ability with back-to-back 30 point games during Lake Braddock’s annual Christmas Tournament last season. With the departure of the area’s leading scorer and First-Team All Met big man James Butler to Navy, Pelham will step into a primary scoring role for Bruins Head Coach Brian Metress. With one of the state’s most talented young sophomores in Quentin James feeding him the ball, Pelham has a good shot to average over 20 points per game this year.
Wynston Tabbs | St. Mary’s Ryken ’18
Wynston Tabbs, who ran on the grassroots circuit with Team Melo this summer, is poised for a breakout junior campaign at St. Mary’s Ryken. The super dynamic lead guard has high level athleticism to go along with an impressive skill set and scoring repertoire. Given the signs of consistent aggression he showed with Ryken during the BSN Summer League, Tabbs could potentially lead them in scoring during their WCAC campaign.
Nate Watson | Bishop O’Connell ’17
Coming off a year in which he led the WCAC in rebounds, Nate Watson enters his senior year with more experience and confidence. The big man, who ran with DC Premier on the UAA circuit this summer, is becoming more and more dominant by the day and has the ability to score both inside and outside of the paint. With not many other bigs in the area who can directly match up with Watson, he could put up monster double-doubles on a nightly basis.
