KC Schmitt — Iowa Barnstormers 16U coach
Luke Empen, 6’7, Northeast Goose Lake
“Luke’s skill-set is that he’s a really, really strong defensive post player. He clogs the lane, he pushes people really well, he battles with bigger kids that are three to four inches taller than him. He’s a dirty work kind of guy and he brings his lunch pail to work, so to speak. He’s a football guy too. He’s a tight end and I think he might play middle-linebacker too for his high school, and I know Iowa is looking at him and Iowa State a little bit (for football). And (for basketball) Briar Cliff, Dordt, some of those schools like that have asked about him.”
John Waggoner, 6’5 C, Dowling
“Waggs is awesome. He’s a kid that you can send on the floor and tell him sarcastically ‘go make friends John,’, and he’ll throw his weight around and do everything he can to rebound. And he’s a lot better with his feet than people give him credit for. I can see why he’s a Division I football player — (he’s got an offer from Iowa State) and Iowa loves him. I think he has a shot to be a college basketball player, although I don’t think he’s going to go that route. I think his mentality just fits football.”
Corvon Seales, 6’2 G, North Scott
“He was with us all year except the first two tournaments of the year when he was still getting over his knee injury. He’s completely different than his brother. His brother is really strong and good around the rim, and Corvon is just really, really long. And right now he’s just long and skinny, but three to four years from now that kid is going to be an amazing player. He’s got a lot of low D1s interested right now.”
Joe Wieskamp, 6’6 G/F, Muscatine
“Joe had a really tough year, going through mono and then getting hurt with the ankle. And he had a hard some keeping it all together, and he still gave us 150 percent every game. He still battled. We didn’t even think he was going to go out and play with us in Vegas, and he played every game, and played as many minutes as he could. He just battled his butt off. I think he’ll come in and make an immediate impact with the Hawkeyes, he’s just the type of kid that isn’t going to settle for less. I mean he works his butt off.”
