They are part of an area of the state that seems to be gaining steam in terms of overall talent for the area. For this season, they had a ton of success early on in the year. Guys like Andrew Kenneally and Trace Ramsey really brought some fight to this group while Norell Smith and Nate Walpole brought a lot of offense. This was team of players that surprised people. Kenneally had an outstanding spring, Smith came from out of nowhere to being a kid all small schools should have been recruiting, and Ramsey really finished off the year strong in July.
Best Player: The player of this group that I got to watch was Lake Central’s Norell Smith. The 6’4 wing was basically an unknown heading into the summer and since then had picked up three offers and now is committed to IU-South Bend. He was great as a scoring threat from the arc, not always because he was going to shoot but because of the threat of his shot. Smith showed he could attack the rim really well and that seemed to open up his game and his teammates.
Players To Watch: Valparaiso’s Trace Ramsey didn’t play this Spring, at least not when I was watching. However, he was there in July and he looked great. He’s 6’6+ and long and a lot more athletic than at first glance. He uses that aspect of his game to make quite a few plays, plays that can change a game. Want to see him as the main offensive weapon this high school season, though.
