Continue ReadingOne of the more intriguing prospects in the 2018 class in Arizona is 6’7″ forward Meekness Payne. He is a very long player with loads of upside, and was poised to be a key member of Mountain Pointe High School‘s team this season. Payne announced today that he will be transferring schools, effective immediately.
Meekness has enrolled at Hillcrest Academy, where he will also reclassify to become a member of the 2019 class. When reached, Payne sited the opportunity to play on a national stage as the primary reason for the move. This will surely shake up the rankings for the class of 2019 in the state of Arizona.
Meekness plays his AAU basketball with the Arizona Prospects, which he will remain with, under coach Mark Brown. As a sophomore, Payne often looked dominant while playing junior varsity. He then followed that up by having an impressive Spring session in club ball. While Payne has made strides in his development this summer, he still has a high ceiling as a player that could project to playing both on the wing and the high post at the next level. With the extra year to develop, along with competing against top prospect DeAndre Ayton and others on a daily basis, which will allow him a rare opportunity to see up close a high major prospect on a day in and day out basis, this appears to be a solid move. Three more years to learn how to prepare, practice, and be coached in a college-like environment is sure to give Meekness the preparation that he needs, not to mention the exposure that he is seeking. Payne looks to be a mid-major prospect.
