SG Chris Orlina (Woodside ’16)
One of the most consistent performers from the weekend, Chris Orlina showed his toughness and big time scoring ability. The lanky and athletic wing guard was very good off the bounce. He didn’t mind contact in the lane, and showcased a smooth mid-range pull up.
PG Ryan Allen (DeMatha ’17)
We’ve seen Ryan Allen’s shot-making and paint getting ability, but what we haven’t really talked about is his explosiveness. The strong, athletic lefty showed off his bounce by going baseline and jamming it with one hand in traffic.
C Luka Garza (Maret ’17)
Luka Garza possesses a rare blend of size and skill to go along with a terrific motor. The 6-foot-11 Center has very soft hands. He consistently made strong rim runs, and was absolutely relentless on the glass. Iowa Head Coach, Fran McCaffery, was here to see him this weekend. The Hawkeyes were Garza’s first high major offer.
G/F D.J. Harvey (DeMatha ’17)
D.J. Harvey played with a notable chip on his shoulder this weekend. The athletic and versatile wing crashed the boards hard and went to the rim looking to posterize defenders. Harvey showed off his ball handing ability, and was efficient from the catch or when pulling up on a dime. Notre Dame Head Coach Mike Brey, a DeMatha alum, was in to see each of his contests this week. Brey was also present to see Harvey at the Oladipo Skills Academy.
PG Daniel Kiely (Notre Dame Prep ’17)
We saw him play well at Hoop Group Elite 1, and Daniel Kiely stood out again this weekend. Kiely was quietly one of the most consistent guards of the entire weekend. The crafty guard will take a prep year at Notre Dame Academy.
PG Chris Lykes (Gonzaga ’17)
He’s almost always the smallest player on the court, but Chris Lykes is also often usually the best player. Lykes once again delivered for Team Takeover this weekend. The steady lead guard demonstrated his explosiveness, skill, and feel for the game. Jim Larranaga, the boss at Miami, stopped in to check on his future point guard this weekend.
Darryl Morsell (Mount Saint Joseph ’17)
Darryl Morsell just won’t stop producing. The versatile, relentless guard was all over the place for Team Melo. A host of high major programs are currently tracking Morsell, who should end up ranked in the top 100 nationally by the end of the summer. Buzz Williams, the Head Coach at Virginia Tech, witnessed each of Morsell’s contests first hand this weekend.
G/F Eddie Scott (Gonzaga ’17)
“Mr. Toughness” award of the weekend goes to Eddie Scott. The athletic wing was the glue guy for Team Taekover EYBL. He dove for loose balls, rebounded, got in the passing lanes, and hit open jumpers. All while playing with a severe injury to his left ring finger. A host of mid-major programs have been targeting Eddie as their primary recruit.
PG Jelani Williams (Sidwell Friends ’17)
Jelani Williams is an unheralded player for Team Takeover EYBL. The 6-foot-5 point guard leads with his work ethic, his actions, and his words. Williams is very crafty around the basket and is always looking to make the right play. Don’t be surprised to see high academic high major programs begin their involvement with Williams late in the process.
F Jalen Smith (Mount Saint Joseph ’19)
“Sticks” once again demonstrated a very soft touch out to the three point arc. The long-limbed, athletic 6-foot-9 power forward showed off his mobility defensively as he hedged out hard on screens and actively protected the rim. Pretty much every high major program in the country is tracking him at this point.
G Brandon Slater (Paul VI ’18)
Coming off a solid run at Peach Jam, Brandon Slater didn’t disappoint in his encore performance. The versatile, athletic guard was simply exceptional on both ends of the court. Slater made plays for others, hit jumpers, defended with tenacity, and consistently played above the rim.
PG Anthony Harris (Paul VI ’19)
In one of the most exciting overall performances on Championship Sunday, Anthony Harris scored 17 of his 21 points in the first half for Team Takeover vs. Team Melo. The big, skilled guard showed off a wide offensive arsenal to go along with a sense of urgency defensively. Harris, who will be a sophomore next year, was perhaps the best player of the 16U Championship contest, and he was the youngest player on the court.
PG Wynston Tabbs (St. Mary’s Ryken ’18)
A strong, athletic guard who likes to get downhill, Wynston Tabbs was a tough cover off the bounce for Team Melo. The point guard, who plays high school ball at Ryken, did a great job setting up his teammates for easy looks. Tabbs, who recently received a Penn State offer, is projecting as a sure fire mid-to-high major point guard.
G Noah Locke (McDonogh ’18)
Noah Locke demonstrated big time shot making ability and toughness this weekend. Along with his scoring prowess, the offensive juggernaut was a standout defensively. Locke anticipated well in the passing lanes, and came up with several steals. GW, who is the only school to host Locke for an unofficial visit and offer him, was in for each of his contests this weekend.
SG Isaiah Borders (TC Williams ’18)
He’s been off the radar for a while, but Isaiah Borders is ready to make a strong comeback based on what we saw this weekend with Team Melo. Borders is an extremely talented, 6-foot-6 scoring guard who can do it from all three levels. His ability to stretch the floor was vital for Melo in the first half vs. Takeover.
