The 2020 prospect, who will attend Lakewood St. Edward, has the ability to run as the point guard. Upon initiating the offense, he can move into the post and make an opponent regret size mismatches.
“I enjoy playing the point guard, so I hope to further play that … I try to do what’s best for the team. So if a team needs me to play off ball, I will,” Huffman said. “Right now I’m best at driving and stuff. And just attacking.”
According to Huffman, and others around him, 6’5” is a likely height to top off at.
The combination of skills and size has already warranted some college interest — Huffman told PHO that the University of Akron has asked to talk to his parents, following the Middle School Peach Jam in Georgia.
This grassroots season, Huffman travelled with Murphy AC. Although the team played with an unmatched continuity, most members of the team are looking to move on to other programs.
What does that mean for Huffman specifically?
“Most likely either King James or All Ohio Red.”
Not only will Huffman, likely, be playing for a top tier program in the summers, St. Edward is a powerhouse. In June, he worked out with the team and attended open gyms, but they do not attend team camps or play in summer leagues.
What are his expectations for freshman year with the Eagles?
“I hope to play varsity my first year… It’s up to the coach. But if it doesn’t, then I’ll still try to work hard,” Huffman said.
“I work out maybe two to three hours a day. I either go up to St. Eds to work out with my coach, Delvon [Blanton], or I go up to shoot at Gilmour.”
In order to continuously add skills to his game, Huffman has been focusing on defense, pull-up jump shots, and ball handling.
It will be interesting to see how St. Edward uses his skills as a freshman. Whether it’s at the junior varsity or varsity level, he will be challenged by larger opponents. However, his passion and work ethic point to him figuring out how to be effective.
Regardless, Grant Huffman should be on your list of incoming freshman to pay attention to as the high school season approaches.
