Johnston 2018 shooting guard Bo Sandquist had a coming-out party for Kingdom Hoops, scoring 14 second half points, but his team fell just short of a Sweet 16 bid. After a hot start it looked like this KH team would cruise into the next round, they led 33-26 at the break. But a sluggish start to the second half saw them down nine midway through, and it was an insurmountable deficit.
10:10 — Team Iowa Blue 16U 76 vs Wisconsin Academy (Kostroski) 70
Carter Frey scored 20 points to lead the way for a very talented Team Iowa squad, and 2017 guard Maleik Jackson wasn’t too far behind. That’s not to mention the two stars on the team, 5th-ranked 2018 Hunter Strait and 12th-ranked Derrick Diggins, who both were impactful. Add 6-foot-6 Cedar Rapids Washington forward Max Campbell to the mix, and you have a team that could continue to make some noise past the Sweet 16.
11:15 — Iowa Intensity 16U 56 vs SD Attack 44
This Iowa Intensity team has been heralded by us all spring and summer, and we’re not stopping now. East Marshall small forward Zaine Leedom was utterly sensational on the defensive end, swatting shot after shot. And Lynnville-Sully shooting guard Brevin Hansen showcased his buttery stroke plenty. Garrett Strutz made some crucial plays down the stretch. We would not be surprised if this team advances to the Elite Eight. Sioux Center guard Tyus Arends showcased some serious skills for South Dakota Attack, he may be due for a bump in the rankings.
12:20 — Kingdom Hoops Elite 17U 80 vs LockDown Elite (IN) 71
An absolutely horrendous start turned into one of the most remarkable flurry’s of basketball I’ve ever seen in summer ball for Kingdom Hoops in this Sweet 16 qualifying win. The Lock Down Elite squad was overwhelmingly speedy and skilled, and added some plus athleticsm to the mix, shell-shocking KH early. It was 37-20 at the break. But Trey Buchanan (IL) scored 19 second half points, including six 3s, to catapult his squad to the nine point win. Buchanan finished with 23 points, Drew Maschoff and Charley Crowley each added 15. Kingdom Hoops outscored Lock Down by 29 points in the second half.
1:25 — SD Attack 17U 60 vs Wisconsin Academy 48
South Dakota Attack has three Iowa guys on its roster — Christian Kyles, Trent Hilbrands, and Chris Kroll — making it a must-watch team for us this weekend. It turns out the three are vital parts to the team, especially Kyles and Hilbrands, who were both instrumental down the stretch. Kyles was perhaps the best surprise of the day, he was sensational in crunch-time and scored six crucial points down the stretch to help aid his team the a Sweet 16 bid.
2:30 — Kingdom Hoops Elite 15U 55 vs Iowa Pump ‘N Run Black 54
There is no Tyreke Locure here for Kingdom Hoops this weekend, he’s playing with Pure Prep in Vegas. But James Betz was dominant down low, and Hoover’s 2019 point guard Marcus Edwards provided some razzle-dazzle to help fill the void. With 55 ticks to go Edwards zipped by his man and put in a bucket at the rim putting KH up one. Then Pump center Rhett Zegler answered answered with a bucket of his own, pushing his team’s lead back to one. And then it was Edwards again, this time with some more flare, putting in a difficult shot off the backbaord to win the game. That was a very good Pump ‘N Run team that was eliminated. They’ll be fun to watch the next two summers.

Sweet 16
Kingdom Hoops Elite 16U 48 vs PSA Cardinals (NY) 59
Camden VanderZwaag stayed red-hot — he hit eight 3s in the previous game — and Nathan Johnson scored 17 points, but an early lead for Kingdom Hoops was quickly erased by a stronger, faster and more athletic PSA Cardinals squad. The New York-based program drew a large crown of Division I coaches, and held a seven point lead at the break. VanderZwaag would get hot – again – in the second half and KH would tie the game at 37, but that was promptly followed by a 7-0 Cardinals run, and they never looked back.
Kingdom Hoops Elite 17U 71 vs MBA Flight (MO) 68
Illinois point guard Trey Buchanan was once again the straw that stirred the pot in yet anther monster come-from-behind win for comeback specialists of this tournament Kingdom Hoops Elite 17U. They came back from down 17 down at half to make the Sweet 16, and after trailing by 11 at the break in this one Buchanan and Co. blitzed the Missouri program and erased its Elite 8 chances with a flurry of 3s, steals and lay-ins. Ben Juhl was outstanding on both ends of the floor, he scored 13, and Douglas Wilson added 12. Kingdom Hoops will play in the Elite 8 tomorrow at 10:10 AM,
Kingdom Hoops Elite 15U 70 vs JC Hoops 40
After needing essentially two buzzer beaters — both from Hoover guard Marcus Edwards — to make the Sweet 16, Kingdom Hoops 15U Elite thrashed JC Hoops by 3o to make the Elite 8. The game was ended with two minutes left to play, and the running clock was enforced at the six-minute mark. Not bad considering they got down 8-0 early to the Kansas City-based program. James Betz was again absolutely dominant, he scored a team-high 13. Valley 2019 Aguek Deng scored 12. Lino Malual and Gatdoar Bijiek both chipped in with 11.
