There are a lot of positives that can be pointed out about this squad, as they finished the summer ranked #11 Nationally and #3 on the west coast after posting a 56-5 record. They were not always the most talented team on the court, but they played the right way and always played together, getting production from everyone who stepped on the floor. While they ultimately fell short in the Under Armour Nationals, and the Bigfoot, this team has nothing to hang their heads about, as they appear to have a very bright future with this core of talented guys. The late addition of Jalen graham inside adds some needed size.
Honorable Mentions:
Majok Deng 6’5″ F 2019 Salpointe Catholic- Majok is one of the best young prospects in the country, recently ranked as high as #4 on the west coast by ESPN. While his talent, and the ease in which he effects the game in a multitude of ways is impressive, his selflessness is what stands out the most. He is an amazing teammate and leader for the Powerhouse team as well as his Salpointe squad. A force on both ends of the floor, he is truly a joy to watch.
Jackson Ruai 6’2″ G 2019 Marana Mountain View- Jackson is a long athlete that competes hard on the defensive end. Constantly coming up with deflections and getting a hand on rebounds, Ruai helps make up for the lack of front court size on this Powerhouse team. Offensively, he gets out in the open floor on transition and elevates well to finish plays. As he continues to become more comfortable handling the ball and creating off of the dribble, Jackson looks like an intriguing prospect to keep an eye on.
Vean Simon 6’2″ G 2019 Undecided- Vean fits in perfectly with this team because he has the type of game that meshes well with other talented players. He is comfortable getting 5 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebound with 3 steals, but can also have a game where he has 20 points on efficient shooting when you need him to. Another long perimeter defender, Simon not only uses his length, but knows how to utilize angles to force an offensive player where he wants him to go, which is an underrated skill. A consistent shooter from deep, mainly the corners, Vean is a prototypical “3 and D” guy that is becoming such a valuable commodity at all levels.
Evan Nelson 6’2″ G 2020 Marana Mountain View- While Majok is the straw that stirs the drink for this team, the young Nelson is often the engine that gets them going. More of a scoring point guard than a facilitator, he is long and quick enough to get to the basket against most defenders. Though shot selection can become questionable at times, the way he competes makes you willing to live with an occasional quick shot. A 2020 prospect, Nelson looks to have a lot of growth in front of him, and is definitely someone to keep an eye on.
