They did just that as they were able to go 2-1 in pool play with their only lose coming to Portland Basketball Club, whom averaged to win their other two games by almost 40 points and features a top 30 prospect in 2018 6’10” Kamaka Hepa of Jefferson High School. Powerhouse lost the game by a mere 2 points while competing at a very high level. Furthermore, the team was able to make it out of the first round of bracket play. This group features many young men whom should be on college’s radars.
Honorable Mentions:
Jaxon Baker 6’6″ F 2018 Brophy Prep – Baker has shot the basketball well all summer for Brophy. He did the same in this tournament as well. Brophy and Powerhouse relied on and will rely on Baker to be a long body who closes driving gaps defensively and shoots the ball at a high level from deep offensively. On quite possibly the biggest stage that he saw all summer, Baker aided Powerhouse by scoring 11 points with 3 threes against Portland Basketball.
Jok Jok 6’7″ F 2018 Moon Valley – Last year, Jok demonstrated an abundance of potential. He has great length and an ability to get up and down the court. He possesses many intangibles that cannot be coached. However, it appears as though that he has gained new skills to compliment his uncoachables. His ability to shoot the basketball extends the court and add to it the fact that he can get to the rim in one dribble from anywhere inside of half court due to his length, he could be a huge issue. Defensively, he takes up the paint and guards multiple positions as well.
Chris Orozco 6’5″ F 2018 Sunnyslope – Although Orozco did not have one of his finer games against Portland Basketball Club, he has grown as a player asternomically this summer. He has great strength and length for a high school prospect. In addition to being able to be a bruiser down low, he has improved his ability to shoot the basketball from deep and from the mid-range. The speed of his shot still needs some work; however, it has improved from last off-season.
Walter Talley 6’7″ G/F 2019 Desert Vista – Talley’s length and ability to play multiple spots offensively were greatly shown in the game against Portland Basketball. He played anywhere from point guard to center and showed a proficient handle on the ball as well as a solid ability to attack from the wing. His stroke look solid as well. Since last season, his motor has improved as well. Talley looks poised to have a breakout season under new coach Gino Crump as Desert Vista takes steps to contend for a state title.
