Continue ReadingStaunton, VA native Jaylin Reed quietly put together a strong sophomore campaign at the Miller School of Albemarle in Charlottesville. The 6-foot-2 guard was the second leading scorer on his team while shooting over 40% from long range and nearly 50% from the field. The rising junior has a high motor, but also prides himself on playing solid defense.
Jaylin collected the third most total rebounds on his team behind VMI bound Tyler Creammer and NJIT bound Ron Alston. His ability to consistently defend at a high level is one of his best attributes.
“I’m someone who really likes to play defense. I take pride in my defense,” Reed stated. “I like to create for other guys as well as get my own shot.”
An underrated ball-handler who is often pigeonholed as a shooter, Reed has the ability to play both on and off the ball. His game is not entirely based on shooting. With that being said, perhaps the biggest improvement he’s made in his development over the past few years has been his perimeter shooting ability.
“I’m getting stronger with the ball and my shooting ability has definitely improved,” he said. “I’ve been working on that a lot this summer and the past summers.”
While he’s considered a standout defender on the perimeter, Reed has not stopped working on that part of his game. He’s also still expanding his offensive skill set.
“I do take pride in my defense, but I do need to work on that more,” he began. “My lateral movement. And more of a catch and dribble pull up.”
Jaylin received his first division 1 scholarship offer from NJIT. He’s a standout in the classroom who boasts an excellent 3.8 GPA. Liberty, Rider, Harvard, Princeton, Lafayette, Stanford, American, Wichita State, Clemson, Davidson, Creighton, Temple, and Florida International are schools he claims interest from.
Reed is running on the AAU circuit with Boo Williams WAWG 16U this summer. As the July live period draws nearer, he’s focused on one goal.
“My goal is just to win tournaments. The last couple tournaments, we’ve won a lot of games but not the tournament,” Reed explained. “We have a chance to do that if we communicate, move the ball around, don’t be selfish, play defense, and rebound.”
