Well, it should come as no surprise that Iowa’s top-ranked senior-to-be was the most valuable player at this tournament. Exactly how much success he had — particularly on Championship Sunday — was a bit surprising though. He scored an absurd 31 points in the second half of a semifinal game against Johnston, that was after his team was down 12 at the break. He ended with 38 points that game, and his team won by 16. In a final against Valley, McCaffery scored a game-high 36 points, 21 of them in the second half, and was instrumental down the stretch. What a day for the Hawkeye-commit.
First Team
2017 Connor McCaffery, 6’5 G, Iowa City West
He was stronger and taller than all the other guards, and generally big enough to guard all five positions. His 3-ball was scorching too. This was the dominant performance we’ve always wanted to see from McCaffery.
2017 Devontae Lane, 6′ PG, Iowa City West
His uncanny defensive instincts and ability to make tough shots are reasons why he’s No.2 in 2017. Lane makes the game look easy, and with his style of play, that’s an amazing feat.
2018 Camden Vander Zwaag, 6’2 SG, Johnston
He’s one of those guys that when he misses you’re surprised, and he missed seldom this weekend. When the Dragons were playing in a semifinal he missed a 3; I turned to the guy next to me and said — genuinely — “I think that’s the first time I’ve seen him miss this weekend.”
2017 Quinton Curry, 6’6 F, Valley
This was a no-brainer. Curry continued to display his ever-evolving skill-set last weekend; raining in 3s, skying for dunks, and dribble-drives into the lane. He’s the best player on a team that could repeat as state champions.
2018 Nathan Johnson, 6’5 SF, Waukee
Johnson has always been a human Pogo-Stick, but he’s really come a long way with his skill-set. His 3 is a legitimate threat, and he’s a menace on the boards and blocking shots. He could emerge as a superstar at Waukee.
Second Team
2017 Drew Johnson, 5’11 PG, Waukee
2017 Grant Kramer, 6’6 SF, Johnston
2017 Charley Crowley, 6’7 PF, Valley

2017 Dawson Jones, 6’6 SF, Johnston
Third Team
2017 Max Techau, 6’7 PF, Xavier
2018 Matt Mims, 5’10 PG, Xavier
2017 Joey Kern, 5’11 PG, Dowling
2017 Chuol Chuol, 6’3 G/F, Ames
2017 Jacob Rau, 6’7 C, Waukee
Fourth Team

2017 Garrett Franken, 6’6 G, Atlantic
