A deep, talented and relatively young Waukee squad got out to a very quick start and never looked back in this 49 point rout of 3A’s Atlantic. Nathan Johnson was sensational in the win for Waukee, the 2018 small forward was impacting the game greatly on both ends of the floor en route to a team high 18 points. Garrett Franken was very good for a depleted Atlantic squad, he was the game’s scoring leader pouring in 21.
11:45 — Des Moines North 73, Xavier 77
This was by far the best game of the day that I saw. Not only was their a wealth of talent on the floor, but it was highly competitive and close. North’s 6-foot-7 small forward Jal Bijiek had it going early, his fade-away and 3s were going in often throughout the first half, and he scored North’s first 11 points. But Bijiek cooled, and the terrific trio of Max Techau, Matt Mims and Jackson Joens was steady throughout and Xavier built a 14 point lead with just minutes to play. North would make it interesting late using an effective full-court press and taking advantage of Saints missed free-throws, but it was too little too late for the Polar Bears. Techau finished with a team high 22, Mims added 21. For North, Bijiek paced the team with 27 points, including five 3s, and Locure finished with a quiet 25.
1:00 — Des Moines East 80 vs Johnston 111
This was a wild one, not because it was a frantic finish, but because the Dragons poured in 111 points in the win — more than I’ve ever seen in person in any high school game; regular season or offseason. It was an up-and-down affair, with very little half-court sets, and Johnston 2018 Camden Vander Zwaag was quick to pull his trigger, which resulted in a team-high 25 points. East has a very intriguing 2017 with rangy 6-foot-2 guard Fred Bickham, he scored a game-high 27. Grant Kramer and Jeran Proctor were absent to start the game for the Dragons, but Kramer showed up a little before half adding the extra boost they needed to run away with this one.
2:15 — Ames 48 vs Dowling 39
Ames was stout defensively despite being the smaller team, plus there was a lid on the hoop for Dowling, resulting in this closer-than-score-says rout. Dowling was down big at the half, 35-12, but seemingly blossomed into a better team as the game unfolded. It’s a very different team than they put on the floor last winter, and it seemed they built chemistry as the game wore on. Ames was led by Carter Mumm who finished with 12 points, and 2018 wing Joe Evans who chipped in with 8. Chuol Chuol also scored 8, and was instrumental on the defensive end for the Little Cyclones. Dowling senior-to-be Sam Olson was sensational in the win, scoring a game-high 16 points.
3:30 — Waukee 75 vs Urbandale 52
Waukee continued to impress in this quarterfinal rout of a much-improved Urbandale squad. Again it was Nathan Johnson who had the biggest impact on the game for the Warriors. The junior-to-be scored 15 points and made some big-time plays on the defensive end to help his team advance to tomorrow’s semifinal. Jacob Rau was again very good too, chipping in with 13 of his own. Waukee point guard Drew Johnson set the tone early, scoring 11 of his team’s first 14 points, he finished with 12. For Urbandale it was Eric Milewsky who impressed, the fast and stout 2018 finished with a team-high 11 points, he will have a breakout junior season next winter.
